The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I can't answer that!.... I don't think you're supposed to be mad in church.

But maybe if you go, you'll be lifted out of bein' mad!

A friend of mine, Celia, called me today and told me that a guy she works with has a friend that has a horse he wants to sell cheap. She knows I buy them like that sometime and resale. I called and talked to the guy and have an appointment to go see it Sat. afternoon.

It's a 14 year old registered, blue roan, Quarter mare. Supposedly professionally trained on barrels. $600. You think it's worth looking at?? I set it up for Sat. so that I would have time to cancel after thinking about it.

Absolutely worth looking at, depending on what you would want her for! Sounds like a great price if she's remotely sound.

She's going to be long past her prime to be running barrels for a living I think, but has perhaps another 10 years in front of her as a trail and pleasure horse and teacher for the young.

Yeah, I realize she's out of her prime for serious competition, but if she is not a crazy, she'd make some kid that wants to playday a good horse. I'm just really don't have the room for another horse right now. Never fails, you hear about this sort of thing when you don't want it and when your looking for one there are none to be found.

Actually, I have a gut feeling that she is not going to be all that great. The guy told me the horse was his brothers, but his brother didn't like her because she was so "quick". He said "my brother just doesn't get it that it's a barrel horse". Sounds like it could be a crazy. How/Why this guy landed up with her, I don't know, but he said he needed the money now. But it never hurts to look, and the guy may have something really good and just doesn't know it. I asked him if he would ride it for me and he said sure.

Well yeah - I wouldn't do it to save money on the horse.... I could get a horse here! It'd be so we could ride together!

Wow, do they always haul hay in enclosed trailers up there. I would think that would make it hotter and dustier to load and unload. Are those two older guys the old guys:)?

Those are the two ~sons~. Dad wasn't on the trip!

Not everyone hauls in closed trailers... Pretty unusual really... but it would be safer to have around here when 10 months out of the year you could have rain any day.

Well someday maybe you can borrow me up a horse from someone and I'll get Mack to take a vacation:) Then someday you can come here.

I'd like to ride in different parts of the country. Colorado, for instance. When we were there several years ago I saw lots of dude ranches. Not the best way to go, but better then nothing. Mack doesn't ride tho, and I wouldn't go by myself in a deal like that.

I'd maybe go on something like that though, to see the country! I have a friend who trailers from here as far as Wyoming and Montana for rides.

And if you could come here, I can certainly borrow a horse for ya!

I actually have a friend how hauls horses all over the country for people buying and selling. She is ALWAYS on the road. I was surprised how much of a call for something like that there is. She runs a boarding stable too, but I think she is making it because of the hauling. I'll have to ask her sometime what it would cost to haul a horse from here to around Seatelle.

Oh, BTW, don't be worried. I knew you were teasing about me bringing that horse to you. I knew it was far. Just was curious about how far, just because it did look like a great place to ride. I don't know that Mack or I could go that far from home:) We're real home bodies. But it's fun to dream.
