The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I committed a pre-emptive cutback on my petunias.... they have been so gorgeous, but have been getting really leggy and needed cut back so they can start over. When I have waited before till they got ugly to cut them back, they've just petered out and not had much to offer later. Hoping they'll be better off this way. Do you guys do this to get a second boost out of annuals in late summer?

I had problems with petunias last year doing that. Getting to leggy. I didn't cut them back, just pulled them up:) and started over with something else. That's kind of what I am doing now. my impatients was getting to over grown, I didn't like it. I am figureing out that annuals are better just one or two of any one kind. Not good in mass plantings.

I've been working the last few days on clearing some of them out and putting in things like some ornametal grasses, and peace lilies:). Moved my glad blubs to along the fence here and there. That way next year I can tie them to the fence. I planted 3 hibicus bushes too, but am afraid I screwed up there too, they my get to big where I have them. Going to leave them for now, but may move them next spring. Here's the new stuff, Peace lily in the center of the wall, and the 3 hibiscus behind the rocks:

Here is a look at that side as a whole:

Other side where I still have a lot of impatients:

From the outside of the fence:

I like the periwinkles along the sidewalk, but they were suppose to be the white ones. I looked at the tag wrong when I bought them, they didn't have a flower yet. I actually had more impatients on the side I pulled it up on. It looks alot better now, I think.

I forgot to add, your petunias are sure pretty:) I think white flowers mixed in really makes the colors stand out. That was why I wanted white periwinkles.

It sure looks lovely now! You can just hack back on annuals and they'll start over, and I think I am being smart by doing them now before they start to die under their own weight. I'll let you know in a week or two if they are coming back as strong as they were the first time.

The lavender is pretty though.... I like white flowers mixed in too. especially with dark colored flowers. Makes them show up.

I didn't know that. I've trimmed them a bit, here and there, but never anything drastic.

He is about 4 inches long. Yeah it's a walking stick. They are so creepy. I'm scared to go sit in my swing now:)

Do you have any bugs up there?

Jenny is here and we have been coloring her hair. I took pictures of the process but for some reason they didn't come out:(. I'm going to try a new disc, you'll at least get to see the end result. It's WILD:)
