The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Sounds about right. I actually work for the college that I go to. Works for me. :-)We have a family friend who was a locksmith, and he made good money.

Indeed I did ride today. Did it go better than last time? Yes. Thank God. :-) Turns out that the way of teaching dressage was completely different 10 years ago. She's still trying to beat the hunter of out me though :-) Hunters are very noisy. Dressage is a more subtle and quiet, and polite, so the way that I'm using my aids is completely different. But I'm relearning. The only sore spot to my ego is she's treating me like a rank beginner, but I guess in a different way, I am. :-) But in two lessons, I can see a vast improvement in the way that I ride.
And it turns out that her instructor was my very first dressage instructor, so I'm going back tomorrow to say hello.

Glad you had a good lesson. I would think riding horses like riding a bicycle. It comes back to you.

It comes back to you.

Indeed it does. :-) Oh! I was doing turns on the forehand today. The horse could turn on a dime. I just love riding supple horses. I was beyond impressed, and couldn't wipe the stupid grin off of my face.

That's the way I was the first time I went completely around the arena trotting. The only thing was that people were going "look at Okie" , instead of "look at Janis" . He was just running. I was doing all the work :')

We have broke 100 every day this week I believe. At 6 this evening still hot and humid. I went to rescue Cindydawg and then came back in. My grandson had soaked her along with himself and then was pretending she was a cow and roping her

Sounds like you had a good ride:)

I didn't ride yesterday, grandkids here.

I heard thru the grapevine that the vet that came out last Fri. when Rusty was sick was going to be in the neighborhood so I called her and she came by to draw blood from Rocky for a coggins. She went over and checked Rusty's lungs and said they sounded better, her words: "not as rough" He was sweating too all over his shoulders and neck. She said his respiration was still higher then it should be but not in the serious level. I can't wait to get thru these antibiotics and run that blood work. He's been on them 5 days, 5 to go.

I haven't gotten hold of my regular vet to get the mare checked. If I don't next week I'll have this one check her. Tired of waiting.

I noticed on the HH you talking about how hot it is there. Is that unusual?

We had some rain move thru here last night. It's not too bad this morning, but if/when the sun comes out it's going to be miserable with the humidity. Strange weather this summer.

I wouldn't say it's unusual, but it is uncommon. we usually have one or two heat waves like this in a summer where it will get in the 90s for some days. But it is uncommon enough in the year, that very few people have air conditioning.

But it doesn't usually last, and it is poor that we haven't had ~any~ rain since June.

Well I didn't ride. At 9 he was just starting to eat. By the time he finished and digested and I got him ready it would have already been too hot. I was already burning up. Since I had the camera, I had jeans on :') We went looking at horse trailors instead. Holding on to that money tight and looking for a "better deal" first:') Anyway, I'm going back out to the stables this evening.

Well if I had been in shorts or sweat pants you might have had them by now. I'm going to have to put that on my "Excuses not to ride" list. lol
