The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

They are calm and gentle as a rule... Good luck to her... I just think new riders have enough on their hands without trying to learn and teach at the same time!

Well the heat got to me while Michelle was here, I'm going to go nap:). I guess it's true once you've experienced heat stress your more prone to it. We were only out there maybe 15 minutes, and I had to tell her I needed to go in and sit down. Thought I was going to puke or pass out. Probably the Krispy Kremes didn't help.

I agree. But this girl and her husband are really differnt. They have no electricity, she had her babies at home, etc. Really tough. So funny too, she is such a pretty petite girl, about the age of my son.

I think the manna that the Hebrews ate while in the wilderness must have been Krispy Kremes. The discription of manna in the bible is exactly like them:)

Probably the Krispy Kremes didn't help.
I'd make that a safe bet :-)
It's been hot and humid here, but it cools down around 5, which makes nice riding weather. I've been busy house and cat sitting, just passing time until I can ride again!

That's not bad at all. My son works 2-10 and going to school. He and his 2 little boys here indefinately and I'm having to re-adjust my riding schedule. I guess I'll go back to mornings when the sitter here but I'm giving up my security blanket. No one else around. Oh well, I'll just have to tough it out:')

Lot's of people around. During the day I can get a worker to hold his head but then I'm pretty much on my own. I used to like it that way but the last couple of months my husband been going with me. He really likes it out there and we are looking for another horse. We are just going to have to cut the evenings down to about 2 a week. We were going 5. We work well together. We argue big time sometimes and sometimes on the way to the stable but it's like we both get happy around the horses.:')

Yup! :-) I used to teach kids with various disabilites, and it's alway wonderful to watch them improve and grow.

You do rehab work? Me too. I'm a rehabilitation nurse but I specialize in geriatrics. They keep me at a desk but it's cool because I get to go thru charts looking for problems and the residents drop by with "fun" suggestions. Right now I'm pushing for a game room with a computer and pool table. A couple of months ago we went "fishing". I've seen some of the larger rehabs that specialize in head/spinal injuries. Swimming pools, stables...!!!! In my dreams here probably but where there is a will there is a way, you know lol

I did rehab work as a full time riding instructor. I wouldn't call it rehab so much as therapy. Did horse rehab though, and lots of it. I do get asked for my advice now and again, though, and recently lined out a theraputic riding program for a little girl who is legally blind and has Cerebal Palsy. She's in Maine, and I want to get up there in a couple of weeks to scope things out. It sounds unorthodox, I know, but the little girl is in the care of my friend's family, and I made the outline based on what I was told she could and could not do.

I'm kind of a wandering free spirit right now, though, working to get myself through school and get my BS in Chemistry, perhaps on to grad school, and I spend all my time trying to make ends meet, so right now I'm a Locksmith, and during the school year I work in a lab.

Locksmiths are kind of like ferriers around here:'). Good money. I locked the keys in the car in Houston one day. 35 dollars for about 35 seconds and I was told that was a good price because most higher:')
