The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I would not have thought they would be protective like that.

I wouldn't have either! Brave little guy!

That's amazing, Becky! But I'm not surprised!!

My understanding of roosters is that they can be very protective and even potentially harmful to humans whom they might suddenly perceive as a threat (which can be triggered by almost anything...a flapping shirttail or such). I have heard stories at backyardchickens.com about pet roosters suddenly becoming so aggressive that the child that held it since it was hatched can't even go in the back yard anymore. I recall one man saying his rooster actually spurred him and he had to have stitches...

So I can well imagine a protective roo attacking anything it perceives as a threat and really, I can bet a coyote who thought he was gonna get a quick snack would be pretty startled by a flapping screaming rooster with daggers on it's feet! Maybe startled enough to be off of the thought...

Sounds like your flock is in good hands with this roo!

He doesn't have spurs, at least not yet. Do all roosters get them?

That's my understanding...

He going through chicken puberty, you think? When my hens got near layin' age, that's when they started acting all flaky. My understanding is that roos will too...that's when they start turning agressive, when they start getting sexually mature.

At least he's not a pantywaist! LOL

That must be it:) I have two full grown roosters. Him and an aracauna. The aracauna is just a bit older, and was always very very agressive. Now that I think about it, he hasn't been so aggressive lately. Maybe the GP is teaching him a thing or two:).

I recall one man saying his rooster actually spurred him and he had to have stitches...

I was just remembering. The very first rooster we had we got full grown to keep this one hen we had company. That was a hugh mistake, but it worked out good because that is what caused me to get more chickens. Anyway, tho, that rooster was very aggressive towards me when I would go out to feed the horses. He would run up behind me, and I thought he was pecking me, but now I know he was spurring me. Well he finally did it hard enough that it drew blood. I had had enough. The next time I went out there I was ready for him. I carried a plastic feed bucket with me, and when I heard him coming up behind me I turned and bashed him in the head with the bucket. I didn't really care if I killed him or not. It really hurt when he spurred. Well it didn't kill him, but he never ran up behind me again. I hated that rooster. He was so rough with that one poor hen. Whenever he got close enough to me I kicked him every chance I got. But I finally learned that that was my mistake. I got some more hens and he got less aggressive. Becky

That's kind of funny in a sad sort of way:)

We had a pet duck, drake, that we had to get rid of because it would go after Jenny all the time. She was just about 3-4. The first spring we had him his hormones were working overtime, and he tried it on all of us. The rest of us were able to give him a hard enough kick to make him leave us alone. But Jenny, eithe from being to young or too tender hearted could never kick him hard enough to teach him. He'd put blood blisters on her shins from pecking her. He was actually "doing it" to her foot:(. We sent him to a neighbor who had a pond and some female ducks. He was a happy camper then.

Puffy, one of our buff orpies, is the meanest hen! Joshua has to kick her to get her away from him or she will jump at him with her claws!

She'd be stew if it weren't for her eggs, which are fairly large! She ever quits layin' she's toast. She's so mean, she's not even a pet.

You know they maybe, it had been awhile since I looked close at him. I remember the last time I did look at him and he didn't have any I thought then that some chickens mustn't get them. SHows how much I pay attention except as a group.

Just playing around with the camera this afternoon and caught this guy peeking at the bird feeder. I've moved it out of his reach, and he's not happy.

The feeder is actually hanging from the eaves of the house outside the living room window, and the tree he is on is out a ways.

Great shot!

I go out of my way to feed the squirrels.... I like them... Or rather, like the ~one~ I have. I buy him whole peanuts and sunflower seeds. I feed whatever bird comes around, I dont' discriminate.

Mine is a little red one like yours...
