Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
He had pooped right before the vet got here. Right before we left for the vet he did pass some gas. That's when he looked like he was starting to recover.
She oiled him too, and he never did poop in the trailer.
I don't know if the sedatives would still be affecting him???? Horses are different. And she only gave him enough for about a 30 minute period. He may just be tired. I know I am:)
Becky
That's what I meant. Drugs can make humans sluggish after they wear off sometimes. Besides , like you said, he's probably tired after going thru that and being up all night. Hopefully, he's over it.
Wow, what a scare! I've never had that happen. We always worry about colic but I've never had one do it.
What were his symptoms?
He was sweating:), and no one else was.
He was also laying down and trying to roll, I had trouble getting him up and keeping him up. Believe me you'll know when it happens. I knew the minute I walked out and saw him down something was wrong. They just look different.
Becky
Well, laying down to roll and not getting up when you are standing there would be a clue! How distressing to not know what happened or what he got in to.
While she was treating him, I was telling her about his problems, not sweating, viral respritory infection, slow at urinating, and picky eater.
She has alot more opinions on what I should be doing about all this stuff. 1st she recommended (and I'm going to do it after we get him over this,) that he be on antibiotic even if it is just a virus. She says if it is a virus and he is run down he is more susceptible to bacterial infection. And it could be a bacterial thing anyway, you can't know for sure which it is. I didn't know that she. She also said the lab that my other vet uses does not to a T3 panel. Has to do with their thyroid. and thyroid problems can cause anadrosis and is usually the cause of anadrosis in horses in this part of the country. Because of his picky eating habits, he probably has ulcers because of the stress of the viral/bacteria infection hanging on for so long, so I need to treat him for that.
She said to start to give him antibiotics for 10 days, then run another blood work then go from there. I'm going to do that then evaluate what I'm going to do with this horse.
Becky
Keep us posted!
She said (she said alot:), that he may not have gotten into anything, and that this is all related to the infection, what ever it is. It could be stress from everything else finally starting to get to him. That just doesn't seem right to me tho since he was getting better, or seemed to be.
But she also said:), that with all the rain and mold we have had lately and his system not being 100% that this infection could be getting worse now. That's why I need to get him on antibiotics, and then do more blood work. He could be heading for pnemonia(sp).
Can you believe it. This is all so hard to take in when he actually seemed to be doing better. Who to trust???? I'm always so sceptical of "running tests". Sometimes it seems like vets and doctors think people can just go pick some money off the money tree.
I am going to do the antibiotic thing and then run another blood work. But like I said, then I'm going to really re-evaluate what I'll do from that point.
Becky
Understood... colicing now when he seemed better is odd to me because colicing wasn't a symptom of his condition before... It's confusing for sure.
Just talked to the vet and she said he is droopy because of the drugs. That's a relief. I didn't know if they would still be affecting him.
I'm too ease him back on to his feed slow. Just give him handfuls at a time through out the day. If he tolerates that then increase it tomorrow.
Becky
Great that you had someone who would come in the night... I think my vet would be good, but I've never tested it.
How come it was a new vet? Does your other one not do late night emergencies?
I can't believe you are still up. I'm thinking of going back to bed and I was only up staring at the computer till 1:00.
My other vet doesn't do house calls at all:(. This is a local girl who has been out of vet school about 3yrs, and just building a practice. That's why she doesn't have her own clinic. She is a friend of my kids.
I did get to sleep for awhile. Wasn't real restful because I kept waking up worrying about the horse.
I'll probably crash this afternoon for awhile.
Becky
It's always worried me what I would do in case of emergencies because my other vet doesn't do house calls. That is one reason I've been sooooooo religious at all the preventitive stuff I can do to keep this sort of thing from happening, I thought it was working, I haven't had any problems in soooooo long.
I liked this girl other then she talked and talked, not just about horses, she just rambles on and on. LOL. Mack said I had to go in the house, she was making me sick to my stomach:). She made me nervous because I was trying to concentrate on the horse, but didn't want to be rude and not seem attentive to her. She talked everything from horses, people, Islam, Bush/Kerry, religion, Catholics, her husband, etc. etc. Nice girl, I just wasn't in the mood for chit chat.
Becky
Yeah - life threatening emergency going on here! Can we just talk about that? ;~D
I'm back
Well! I just woke up from a nap!
You've done something more interesting! Did you work him? Tell us!
As I said.... just woke up from a nap. Hows Rusty doing today?
Yeah, I was checking to see how Rusty doing, I guess they are resting.
How did it go? Good and not so good. I choked getting in the saddle and he was perfectly still too . Worse than last Sat. Go figure.
Riding was good though. I walked him in the round pen a little and then we went to the arena. He wanted to zig zag troting and my legs still shaky so I took him to the "golf course" and trotted him straight for awhile and then we went back to the arena and he was more focused. We went in and out of every second cone. I couldn't do circles. Too hard on me right now.
Anyway, I think it was productive even if I wasn't up tp par yet. No fear riding. I just hate that damned saddle. Afterwards Eddie wanted me to get back on. I couldn't. The right leg had, had enough so I practiced just standing up in the stirrup while distributing my weight over the saddle. My dismounts are awesome now. I used to just slid off. I can't bear the weight on the right yet so I have just been hopping down on my left. I think that's cool.:')
