Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
He sure looks good. I've always thought Arabs were more people oriented then Quarters. The Arab I had followed me around in the yard. I didn't have to put fake wire up for him. He could stay out all night and never go any where. Rusty likes to be in the middle but he will wonder off if there's nothing going on out there and he can get the chance.. When it's time for me to put him up is all I have to do is walk out to his run and he comes to see me. The rest of the Quarters have what I call "feed bucket syndrome". The only thing that makes them curious about what you are doing is if you are rattling a feed bucket.

Naming horses is really a hard thing to do. When I had Okie here he was always the Paint. His papered name is Gypsy, what Celia called him, but that didn't fit at all and I could never call him that.
Before I knew what Reba's name was she was just Stan's Mare. I figured when I finally found out what her real name was she would still be Stan's Mare, but Reba fit so well that it was easy to make the switch.
When I got Rusty his name was (I choke to say it) "Spud". Boy, I hate that:(. Even tho he looked soooooooo bad when I got him I still felt that was an insult to him. But it took me about 2 weeks to come up with a name. Tried different things but Rusty is what stuck.
Now I had Susie names before I even saw her. I agreed to take her sight unseen over the phone, but did not go see her till it was time to bring her home. The whole time I talked about her she was Susie. Glad it fit:)
I have my pet red Duroc named too, altho I don't have her. Haven't talked Mack into a pet pig yet:) Emma.
Same way with people. All the people here on the internet are their internet names. Even after you find out their real name. And a few their internet name seems to work better then their real name. Like Cindy and 2J:)
Well thanks for all the pictures:) Hair you said you needed to get inspired, just trying to inspire:).
I need to go feed so I can get my riding done this morning before the heat gets bad. BBL

My daughters horse that was sired by our Rocky, was named Pebbles before she was born:). But when she was born she had a perfectly round white spot on her forhead about the size of a Quarter and "Dot" just fit so much better. So her papered name is www.Rocky.com:)
Becky
Are you working with this horse now, or is she the one you use to have??
Becky
Sipping last cup of coffee.
Why is it so hard to get started on something you really like doing??? I love riding, but it's so hard to get out there and start saddling. I know once I start I'll be glad I did it, but it's soooooo hard to start.....
Becky
2 of them. ( JJ and Sarah ) :')
I got my dog "Cindy" from the pound. She was about 6 months old. The girl caring for them had named them all and she was used to it but the name just didn't seem to "fit" her so I changed it to Cindydawg.
Inertia.... A body at reast tends to stay at rest... ;~D
Thanks for complimenting my old Bay.... Thought you'd say he looked fat, he's not as much of a hard body as yours... too much food and a life of leisure. He looks compared to that fat pony though ;~D
er... He looks ~fit~ compared to that fat pony
Month and 1/2 ago:
Today, trying for the same angle as above:
Honestly, I don't think this horse is ever going to look "fit". I think she will always have the bulky look.
Becky
She's got some muscle definition she didn't have before, but you're right, she's built like a linebacker, not a sprinter ;~D
All very innocent ... nothing to be embarrased of ...
Welllll....I have a call into my old farrier that shoed for me for 7 years. sigh The barefoot thing just won't work for me. Harly is so sore today, I can't ride him, poor guy. I feel so bad, but I had to try it. If I only rode once a wk maybe. Everyone I talk to around here that goes barefoot, just doesn't ride as much as I do especially on the amount of rocks I do.
I've been treating his feet with stuff to make them hard, and I think they have gotten hard, but I guess hard feet are not the answer. His feet are nice and uniform and look level to me. But I guess just walking that much even with good feet will make them sore:(
I don't know for sure if this guy will even return my call. We didn't end on a bad note really, I just stopped calling him and he showed up here one day for a standing appointment that we had, and Mack told him I had found someone else because he wouldn't return my calls about a missing shoe.
Becky
Well I was but I wasn't . I laughed too :')
Well, good luck.... I hope he does call ya back. I have noticed that farriers just stop returning calls when they don't want your business.
He was always good about coming for his regular appointments. It was just if I lost a shoe in between when I had trouble getting messages too him. He told Mack his wife never told him I called and always erases messages before he hears them.
The last time he shoed for me he didn't do a very good job. But hey in one bad shoeing out of 7 years, I could forgive. The problem was because of the bad shoe job they kept coming off. He left alot of shoe hanging all around the edge. I knew they wouldn't stay on, and he knew it too. He commented "I sure left alot of shoe hanging, bet they don't stay on." When I lost the first one he should have just reshoed the horse all around. It took me about a week to get it put back. Then he lost another, and that's when I could never get him to answer my messages. So I found another shoer. Then he showed up for the regular 6 wk appointment saying he never got any of the many messages I left.
I don't know what the deal was. But I'm ready to let it go and give him another try if he'll give me another try.
Becky
Well since we are going to have horses and sooner or later they will need shoes and always trimming I think we need one in the family and since I have 3 sons.... HMM :')
I've thought about learning myself, but it looks way to difficult to me. My old back gets tired just cleaning feet and putting on hoof dressing.
I'm seriously considering getting a rocking horse....
