The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Does he have a good wither, or is he pretty flat on top? Can you post the pic again of him unsaddled?

It just seems that the heat makes his respiration higher. When I asked the vet if I could still ride him he said yes, but don't get him hot and sweaty. Since you can't ride right now for 5 minutes without the horses getting hot and sweaty, even in the early morning, I'm giving him the time off. Remember one day last week he was sweating just out grazing, he didn't do that yesterday, and it seemed hotter.

The other horses with the exception of Rocky all stand out in the sun even tho they have shade available. Rocky goes in.

I'd let Rusty do what he wants to do. It's often worse penning him up inside his stall where he could get too hot. I had one horse that used to flop on his side and sunbath for hours at a time. You could always water Rusty's legs and chest with the hose for a nice cooldown as a treat if he's sweating, or it's really hot. I'm sure he'd like that. As long as he has acess to a place where he can be cooler, he should have enough sense to go there. :-)

Yeah, I'm compulsive about it. I tighten to the sixth hole where it is hard but I can get 3 fingers under the cinch. I put the left stirrup over the horn to remind me and then bring it up another notch before mounting. I test with my finder again and it's hard to even get 2 under. I pull on it with my weight to make sure it's going to stay snug. It's synthetic and probabably with my weight I was in the left stirrup too long. I don't remember it giving but at that time I was just working on going over.

OK - I think probably the most important part of the vet's warning was probably against the ~work~ and huffing and puffing that would make him hot and sweaty.

If he wants to stand in the sun when he has shade available, I am not sure I'd put him in just to get shade.... For his lungs I'd worry more about the dust in those hot corners they like to stand in. Maybe hose that area down, or maybe, with all your rain dust isn't a problem.

That's kind of how I feel about it. When we figured out 3yrs ago that he was anadrotic I read alot about it and found out that I needed to help him cool off as much as I could. Hose him off often if it is hot and the other horses are sweating but he's not. I was told that would help his system to restart. So he does get hosed off alot, and he does like it. He likes to drink out of the hose now. I figure because the water is so much cooler. He's a clown when I'm hosing him. I'll try to get some pictures. If he's drinking and water gets in his nose, he will turn his top lip way up and roll his eyes:)

Everyone I have talked with says it's just something you have to expect with those type of saddles ( a little give). It's not something new. Occasionally I'll need to stand to re-adjust a little to the center. I watch it closely. It was just a bad mount on my part from go.

Dust is always a problem here. That's why I don't stall. I can wet them down good, and in a short time they're dusty again. The only thing that really seems to get them in their stalls is flies. If the flies are bad they will go in.
Well, you all seem to agree with what I thought. Give him his own choice. I've just wondered about it. Thought I'd ask. (Anything to get out of housework:), I'm almost done in the kitchen tho.

Yeah, Even with the cinch tight you can't stand in one stirrup long without it slipping to the side. That is why we use the block, and yeah, if he steps away at the wrong moment and you can't swing right up, it'd slip. Any grownup would have that trouble, it's a lot of weight pulling it around, especially if he doesn't have a big wither. And the saddle slipping around with our weight in it probably doesn't feel good, so when it starts, they may move even more.

The good job for a helper, in addition to holding his head, would be to stand on the far side and hold the far stirrup down when you are getting up. The header helper can control three things at once, head from moving forward, and butt from swinging out, while pushing down firmly in the stirrup.

Yeah, that's what we did Sat. I'm going to hold off a few more days before doing it again though. My right shoulder still needs more rest. I aggravated but I didn't have a choice. Too many what ifs in my head. I just had to make sure I could still do it and I can so I'm ok now.

I admire your drive to do stuff. Really, I do! I had a friend quit because she got tossed once. The strongest thing you have going for you is your courage, to get you through these bumps, to take the risk of keeping going. I hope the bumps are over for ya! You're too old for rodeo!

Tell me about it, but hey I believe I stayed on the 8 (?) seconds. lol More lack of common sense than courage to take up riding at my age maybe but Oh well, I was sensible for years and it was boring :') later.

Not long:( I thought when the kids grew up and moved away house work would be a piece of cake, but sadly, Mack and I are the slobs. My children are neat freaks, I guess from living with slobs for so long.

My biggest problem is dust. I hate dust, but I hate dusting. That's why I've tried to keep nicknaks at a minimum. If the dusting gets behind then I don't feel like doing any of it. That's where I've been the last few weeks. I've needed to dust soooooo bad, even picking up didn't make things look neater because the dust was so bad, so I hadn't been doing anything.

But I'm about to catch up. The rest won't be too hard to do, altho I'm planning on moving some furniture in the bedroom.

Yeah - I am not big on nick nacks either, for that reason. ;~D

OK - I am inspired, or guilted, or something. Need to move the next set of laundry through, and then, I think, mow.
