The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I guess everyone around here prunes them alot then. I had never seen one that looks like the one I have:). As I said I would have liked that look just fine, just not in my garden. It kind of overwhelmed it to me. I have come to the conclusion that I like a more formal garden, trimmed and pruned. Last night I got out there and really went to cutting and pulling stuff up and thinned out alot. It was just getting to much for me anyway. There's still alot out there but next year I'm going to try some different stuff.

Thanks for the advise.

Becky

Yeah the more I ride him and see him rode, the more I really like him. I bought him as a project horse to resale. I get twinges of just wanting to keep him myself, especially if Rusty doesn't make it. But, I've got to stick to my game plan.

A young girl at the stables Heather takes riding lessons at is looking for a horse, and the Heather told them about Harley. They want to look at him. Price was right:).

It's actually hot here too. 80 degrees, which is hot for my tastes! And I just feel lousy today, didn't sleep last night and I'm not caught up yet.

We emptied and refilled our emergency water supply, a 55 gallon drum. We were without water yesterday and today, problems with the well pump that is now fixed, thank goodness.

So I am playing with the hose outside watering, thankful to have it back!

Oh - in a rare week we'll get 90's to a hundred. Not like hot climates I know, but hot for us. I really like cool and wet ground like it rained yesterday, and it hasn't rained since before the wedding, almost a month.

Just the opposite of us. We've gotten alot more rain then normal for this time of year. That's why the humidity is so bad. 88 is usually a really nice day here, but it was brutal today.

Even the chickens are puffing today:), poor things. I've changed their water several times, but it just keeps getting warm, almost hot. I changed the stuff in the hummingbird feeders too, and the old was HOT. I don't know how they drink it.

When do you start to ride a horse? My BIL was given one almost a year old. Nothing done with him. I thought he was younger because I compared him to the one year olds at the stable. He just gelded him. He said he wasn't going to do anything else with him until he was two and then break him for riding. I told him about the stuff they do with the babies at the stable but he didn't seem interested so I shut up.

It depends on the breed and individual characteristics how quickly they mature... QH types are often started at 2 but I think great care must still be taken to not overdo until they are 3-4. They may look mature, but their knees and other joints are not.

Arabs are much slower to mature, and aren't started till 3-4. Not sure on other breeds, they all have their own right time.

Well, you can start to break a horse at two, but I wouldn't go any later than four. It depends on how well they've developed, and how well the growth plates in their legs are doing. You don't want to ride them until those plates have stopped doing what they need to do, because you could damage their legs. But it's perfectly ok to get him used to a saddle and a bridle before two. We were doing that gently with our first baby by the time he was a year. We had him crosstied, and comfortable with a saddle and saddle pad before that.

Yeah, they put halters on them here, after they are about a week or so and start working with leading and cues when they are walking good. His is just turned out to pasture. I'm far from an expert but I think he's going to have his hands full.

Something Special is the shop run by our neighbor, Herb Ryan.
He'd better hope that this horse is really laid back, because babies need constant handling.
