Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
That's right, you write on the body of the horse:). When I first took it out of the bag, I know I must have had a look on my face, like what the hell....., and the girl that gave it to me said it's a chalk board. Got it at Hobby Lobby. I'd like to know now, it they have other animals.
Becky
Thank you:). It was a very Happy Birthday. Mack took me out to eat at a resturant of my choice. I picked Freddies Steak house. You get lots of hordeauves (sp), relish tray with humas bean dip, real taboli, cabbage rolls, barbeque ribs and bologna, salad, then your steak and potatoe. After wards he said he wanted to stop and check on what the crew and gotten finished at the building. I walked in fussing because I didn't want to stop because the kids were suppose to be at the house for cake and ice cream. LOL. There was probably 25 people there with cameras pointed at me as I walked in. Funny how it takes your brain a second to process that it was all set up. I was thinking, "they are so lucky Mack decided to stop here first" LOL.
I realized the diversity of our friends, There were old friends, choctawsquaw and her husband, my horse riding lady friends, our friends from church, some of the people from town that we have met since buying this building, neighbors, and of course family members. It was interesting, to say the least to see them all in one room.
I had never thought before of the differences in the people we associate with.
Becky
LOL!
As for seeing your whole life-group assembled in one place, I had the same experience with our wedding.... Two different families, but also friends from different parts my life all together, my FReeper friends talking to my horse friend and my high school friends. Our wedding was small, and I didn't look up all those that I have lost contact with, or it would have been a ~really~ odd combo!
Wait for him to bounce you up in the saddle and then just rock your pelvis up and forward slightly. Not very far - and as soon as you get up, rock your pelvis gently back down towards the seat of the saddle. Think (or say) "up, down, up, down" in rhythm with his trot, and you should BE there on the word, that's when you arrive, not when you start.
Don't consciously stand in your stirrups. You don't need to get up real high in the air, certainly not to a straight leg -- only just enough for your bottom to clear the seat of the saddle. That's all it takes, you can always tell somebody who's just learning because they post WAY too high. That also makes it difficult to get back down on time - which makes you bounce.
Do not look at the shoulder for now, unless you hold your head up straight and just cast your eyes down to catch a glimpse of the point of the shoulder moving forward. If you bend your head over it will collapse your shoulders and ribcage and make it difficult to post. Posting on the wrong diagonal won't hurt Okie, it's better not to worry about that for now until you get the hang of the motion.
It will come to you suddenly, and it's like riding a bicycle, once you've got it, you've got it.
Just keep trying. A slower rhythm is easier than a rapid trot, so long as your horse keeps his impulsion and doesn't fall into a shuffle (nobody can post a shuffle!)
I told her faster was easier! LOL!
It is with Bay. His stride is really long I feel like there are too many seconds of air in between to post gracefully unless he really moves out. I have to pause too much. In fact, unless I open him up into his endurance extended trot on trail, I sit it.
I was thinking of the way some horses have a "pony trot" - very rapid in rhythm, but very short and up and down like a sewing machine. That's almost impossible to post to. A slow trot BUT with good impulsion seems to me to make the motion larger and easier to find. But that's probably because my mare has a very, very smooth stride but not particularly long.
True. Bay's slowest trot is still really long, like stride-one-thousand-stride-two-thousand. I feel really mechanical and clumsy posting it.
I am gonna imagine that OKIE, being a paint has a relatively daisy-cutter like trot without a ~lot~ of bounce or length of stride. I was thinking she might be trying to post to a pretty slow jog-trot if he was trained western, but it could be that he trots faster or rougher, or she wouldn't be trying to post in the first place!
Cindy, any feel for how his trot compares to the trots we are describing? really doesn't matter, you'll figure out how to post his favorite pace no matter what it is.
No, he trots faster than most of the horses here. That's why it has taken me so long. He's slow to start but fast to trot (around here anyway) and if given the opportunity, he likes to stop on a dime. The inertia used to be a big problem for me. We just go fast. I can slow him to a jog(?) but he likes this pace and I do too but I also like to stay on:'). I've got the hang of it now though and have figured out some stuff to slow him down before stopping or walking. Everyone says he has a beautiful trot and he gets called a "show boy".
With the school horses I had plenty of time and could watch their shoulders and was trained with the up, down, up, down. With Okie, his back /neck not as long as what I was used to. The first time I got on him I felt like I was sitting at the front of a plane (nothing in front of me:') Kind of cool but hard to see his shoulders. Anyway, when I try to think about it and make it happen I probably miss 3 of 4 strides. I may already be kind of doing a little of what I am supposed to by what yall are saying though. My ex-trainer used to say I had it with the school horses. When I feel myself rising, I have been sitting back down in the saddle because I don't want to bounce all over him. When I resist rising is when he's so bumpy. Sounds like he's doing most of the rising work though.
This helps a lot. Gives me something to work with. Books great but I couldn't visualize. I just need to practice
Thanks
You need to post some new pics of him! With you riding and everything! Been awhile!
Well I'm gonna. Just procrastinating. I'll post some of him this week. By, Friday. I promise. I don't know if I want any with me yet though. I want to drop another 20 lbs first:')
Phooey! - I put myself on the thread in all my pudgy ~glory~!
I dropped off some film at Walmart today but took more this evening. After awhile I stopped paying attention so I don't know what all Eddie took. I know he got some of the horse trotting. Also stepping over those wood poles. (what are they called anyway?)
Good! Can't wait to see them... - They're called trotting poles! ;~D
Well this was the first time for us so I guess we used them as walking poles today:')
Thanks for the ping to your pictures, they're really nice. I always thought your name was Kim.??? Where did I get that, I wonder?
That will take some getting use to:), you look like a Kim to me, because that's what I have thought for so long.
Becky
Really, I don't know where you got that idea!
You can just call me Hair if you like, might be easier! :~D
Where's your pics? :~D
~drums fingers on desk~
Well yeah, you're Hair, but when I thought of you and your name it was always Kim.
I rode today. Heather came. She has been riding Harley on the trails. On one of them a big, big tree has fallen over across the trail. It was difficult to get around. I'll try to remember the camera tomorrow to take some pictures. Reba is doing good. And Rusty is enjoying his vacation:). I've been letting him graze on the front yard where the grass is best. He was out there running so much this evening I had to put him up. I have some fake hot wire across the drive to keep him in and he ran thru one side:). Luckily he came right back.
Becky
They always know when the wire is just pretend, don't they?
Yes, remember the camera tomorrow!
ecurbh ~really~ wanted to ride today, but we ran out of day. Tomorrow, we will, and we'll take some pics too. Haven't ridden since before the wedding, except the pony-ride day for the kids.
