The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I think it's when he won't leave her alone that he might get kicked...

...or he just might run her too much. If she can't really get away from him in a relatively small arena... Maybe let them do their thing then pull whichever one out that is easier to catch till the next day.

In a big pasture with lots of mares... well, you know.

Yeah, well, I think we may have talked ourselves out of trying it. I think we'll stick to halter breeding. I sure don't want him hurt. You know if he was nothing but a "stud" it might not be so worrisome, but since we do ride him alot, well we don't want him incapcitated. I really don't want her "run" around like the poor hens either:).

The more I talk about it the more excited I'm getting. Last year I just couldn't get excited about it.

When Dot was born I spent 10 nights sleeping in the barn so we could see the birth, and make sure she didn't have any problems. I was very concerned for the mare, I really liked her, problems and all. Belle, the mare, would come and stand by the cot I slept on all night, till THE night.

You know what I just thought of...It was exactly 4 years ago today. Dot was born on Macks birthday and Macks birthday is today:).

The last baby I sat up waiting for was a friend's, her first baby horse, and we were so excited. I took off from work to spend a week waiting up with her.... and the last night she was showing no signs yet so we both went inside for no more than 30 minutes to eat, and she had it up on it's feet already when we got back. Phoooey sneaky mare!

LOL....

I have to tell a funny story. Last year when we brought her up here, I go a round bale to put in the arena for her. Since she was use to pasture and was going back to pasture, I didn't want to switch her to the pellets.

Anyway, we got the round bale about a week before we brought her home. Just for a treat I put Rocky in there to eat on it for awhile. I don't know what he thought, but he did "it" to that round bale. Totally destoryed it in just a short time. I mean he went bonkers over that round bale. He'd bow up his neck and prance around and then wham bam. It was very embarassing. I was glad our arena could not be seen from the road:)

I was right there in the stall with Belle, and from the time I realized she was in labor till the baby was born was only mabe 45 minutes. Hindsight she was showing signs all day, I just didn't catch it. Afterwards I remember that thoughout the day she would break sweat, but it was a very humid day, so I attibuted her sweating to that, because she was still grazing and acting the same.

We will probably bring her back here the last 3 months. I think there is some fescue down there on that pasture. But by then hopefully Harley will be gone and she can stay in the arena. That would be the safest place for the baby.

No kidding! (My Labrador had a long affair with his cedar bed, I know the embarrassment)

LOL...I gotta tell you, and this is true, I had ONE tulip bulb grow this spring, but the petals NEVER opened, they actually never even appeared:). Suppose that is a message from God??

Yeah, it could be......but those Tulips are tough to get rid of once they've taken root. ;^)

(Chuck got a three day time out today)

No they aren't, you're thinking of daffodils. Tulips start out beautiful but get weaker every year. After a few years all they can manage is to send up limp greens and no flower at all. Best to keep putting fresh ones in. ;~D

I'm back from my ride. I don't think Harley is going to make it without shoes:( In fact I came back real quick because he was so ouchy.

I'm going to order a full set of "Old Mac" boots today. See how that works. They're kind of like an easy boot, only they are suppose to be more secure at staying on in rough terrain.

Well, it was an imponderable to try! Any chance of finding a good farrier if you switch him back?
