Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
(Of course I'd probably be an old lady of 95 by that time . . . ) :-D
Exactly! - All she needs is for someone to put miles on her! ;~D
Those are great pictures:)
Those are the kind of shots I was trying to get the other night, but I think it's starting to get to hot around here now for them to act like that much. They slow way down here in the summer. The humidity this week has been brutal. That's one reason I want to get started early tomorrown morning. Probably going to go to one in the morning on trails then the other in the evening under lights in the arena, aternating them every other day.

Think how well she'll be trained at the end of that long walk:)

That's all any of them need:)

(Paging horse calendar publishers - paging horse calendar publishers!)
Maybe you could work up a calendar with "All Bay and Pony - All the Time" and print it for your friends!
I could be dangerous here! - This is fun!
When I get really good, I could just paint us right into the Olympic team... ;~D
Oh - sure I could!
Well lets see him!
BigMack
LOL...thats good but I got old eyes, ya can't get him any closer?
BigMack
Nope.... I only managed to get the one shot of him....
I have a horsey question.
Yesterday the kids came up and rode agian in the evening. Blake rode Dot again, (I forgot the camera on the trails:(), anyway, she is such a good good horse that it has inspired me to get her momma bred again. I am going to for sure go tet her (we pasture her down where the kids live,) bring her home and bred her.
Question: Our stud for, since we have owned him 10 years, has always been haltered on a lead rope when he has bred a mare. The mares were haltered too. Does anyone have a clue how dangerous to the mare or stud it would be if I just put them in the arena together for awhile, till the job was done.
To tell the truth, Mack and I are just so lazy, that it is hard to get up and go out there and get it done. Last year we were going to breed her and had her up here for over a month and never got it done. Finally just gave up.
Neither one will have shoes on, and Rocky has never been real aggressive, you know really biting, BUT he was haltered. The mare was a very easy breeded, stood like a champ even tho the year we bred her to get Dot she was a maiden mare.
Anyway, What you think of just letting them run together??? Probably need to keep the two geldings completely away from the arena....
Have you two ever done any breeding?
Becky
I bred my Arab stallion.... haltered in hand, like you describe.
I think the considerations to pasture breed would be how socialized he is... whether he would be able to tell when she was ready or if she was gonna kick him. She could really lay him open if she decided now wasn't the right time ;~D
If I were going to turn them out together, I think it would be after they had done it once already if it had gone really well from both points of view and they weren't strangers ;~D But I am a worry-wart about that kind of stuff. I cross-hobbled the mare I was breeding my stallion to.
I don't think you are a worry wart. Everytime we breed a new mare I'm scared to death he is going to get kicked. Before we got him, 10 years ago, he did run in a pasture full of mares one summer. Other then that he has always been alone. You saw what he did to the gelding....
But this mare is one he has breed two other times. Once we got Dot, the next year it didn't take, we have never tried again. Anyway their not complete stranges.
But that is a good idea, about breeding them once on halters, then turning them loose together. You would think it would not be that a big a deal to go out there and catch two horses, but it's a pretty intense thing. I have always hated having to do it that way. I usually try to get my son to come hold the mare. But this particular mare really doesn't like men. She's the one I rode for 6 six years. Even tho she was a loon at times to ride, she really was MY horse. I spent alot of time on the ground and riding that horse trying to fix her. She was always perfect for me on the ground, came to me. When Dot was born it never bothered her for me to handle Dot.
I keep thinking of selling her as a brood mare, but just don't want to. And then Dot has turned out to be soooooooooo good. Just like her daddy. Jenny had her loping circles last night she got the correct lead first time both ways, head down, good strong trot. Just a great horse with a great mind AND a great size. Alto the bloodlines she is she could really grow this year....we're anxious to see. Rocky's babies always grow a bunch their 4th year.
Are you considering leaving them together longer than the 'few minutes it takes? Or pulling one of them back out when they're done? If left together, it might get like your rooster when you don't have enough hens... I don't know what their rest period might be or whether they will ~agree~ on the same rest period. ;~D
That is exactly one of my questions:)?
Becky
Hey, 2 0"s :)
