The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well, I'd take them but I've been sending my extra Roosters to a person who eats them. I have one Aracuna Rooster now, and as soon as I get eggs to hatch next month he is out of here. He is the meanest thing I have ever seen. My poor hens are so tore up. The Polish guy is OK, and I have hatched some others out. Hopefully in those batches I will get one that is not so rough. If yours isn't rough with the hens I may keep one if I'm short.

Nah, it just happens but I will be surprised if he is. My vet usually draws but it's not uncommon around here. We have to worm every month. He's due again. I was going to rotate because I've popped him with Quest twice in a row. I have one left and I may go ahead and use it again. It's an hours drive to the TSC.
He did give the ok for him to be pastured but wanted his feed cut back. He's good where he is. I want to show you something though

Just my uneducated horse guess but I think he was losing on the crimped and he gained it back fast with this protein and he is just having to adjust to the heat and humidity. I listened to what yall said but what really made me decide to put him out was yesterday. I tied him up outside. It was so hot in the barn I could hardly stand it. I was drenched by the time I had him saddled and brushed.

He really doesn't need more then 10% protein.

How much of that supplement does he get,,,it's 20%...that is an awful lot. I know Hair said something about that Red Cell stuff. But that stuff will really hype them up, IMO. I'd ask the vet if he does recommend a supplement about it hyping a horse. Is'nt there some way you can give him what ever he needs to fix the anemia but not hype him up???

Older horses, yes, they can tolerate stuff like that but not one as young as he is with no health problems. My daugher in laws horse was anemic last year, but altho he looked good, his ass was dragging all the time. They just turned him out to rest and feed him more grain for awhile. No supplements. Be very careful of supplements.

Cindy, IMO, you need to take him off ALL supplements, put him on 10% protein feed, put him out on pasture and leave him alone. If he drops weight increase the amount of feed you give him. Don't give him anything else. This is JMO.
His whole life that is exactly how he has been feed.

Protein does NOT put weight on a horse. Fat does. If you give them too much protein it will cause them to be hyper which in turn causes them to fret, especially being cooped up where they can't get rid of that energy, and they can loose weight. The higher protein could be the very reason he is sweating so much.

On that post where I said to put him on pasture and leave him alone, I did not mean don't ride him, I meant leave his feed alone. Watch him, if he drops add some grain, if he gains cut it back. It is never a static thing, you have to adjust all the time. It depends on the quality of the pasture, and that changes with the seasons, the quality of hay, the amount you use him...just alot of different things. You like the way he looks now. Make that your standard and adjust up and down to keep him there. What I do is really look at them every month or so, get the weight tape if you have too. Once again tho, JMO:)

He has been dragging the last several weeks. The vet said he is not a hyper horse but if he feels bad he's going to be irritable. I still think he's adjusting to the climate but we will see tomorrow. Not sure how I can get the protein down though since he stock feeds unless I buy my own feed and do it myself which may be what it comes down too.

Sorry about the question. You misunderstood my motive. I was thinking if he is anemic it might be from when Celia had him. She never wormed as often as she should have I thought. My next question was going to be if that could cause anemia. I was going to tell you that so you wouldn't worry that it was something you did. I am not at all upset with anything you have said. I'm just talking here just like everyone is. I feel I could learn something. As I said it's funny if he is anemic, when he is looking and acting so good. I'm wondering if it's something I need to worry about with my own. I thought if they look and act good they are OK. Of course we need to wait to see if he is or not. But if he is I don't think it's anything you did. I just want to learn about anemia.

Please feel free to talk about your horse. If I say something you don't like tell me:) I won't stop talking to you. I thought we talked about that the other day. Friends should be able to do that.

I don't really know. But I've always been told that 10 is all a horse of his age, in his shape needs. Maybe they can only matabolize so much and the rest just turns to energy??? But would protein fix anemia...I'm just asking...I don't know??? Ask the vet what protein level he needs? Surely if the vet says something differnt then what Tita is giving him, she will switch for you.
