Forgive my missing southern snobbery gene.
My father was born to an unwed teenage domestic worker in Detroit during the depression, and his family moved around a lot - as has mine since my husband died. No roots to write about. No great resentment to harbor for generations. No superior heritage to be proud of..... just plain Americans of today sans the old Euro-style elitism and feuds.

And no strong family ties, either? I am going to a family reunion this weekend in western Kentucky. O'Flood was the origional name of my great grandfather from Ireland. He was a debtor, thus the O in front of his name.
We are expecting over five hundred direct family members to be in attendance. No southerners, except my sister and me.
I have not seen my sister in a year and we miss each other terribly.

My father was born to an unwed teenage domestic worker in Detroit And this is your own grandmother? No wonder you don't understand familial relationships. If I described my grandmother in such terms, there would be a lightening bolt from heaven.
