Alexander is good, if you're a forgiving reader. I like how he picks a mythos, adapts it, and writes his story. He always uses the same cast, with different names - Taran is Jen is Theo is Lucian... and you picked the right series to start with. The Prydain Chronicles shows off the cast the best.
I have a different opinion than Rosie on this, but I read Prydain at the right age and so still have sentimental attachment... Princess Eilonwy was one of the first strong female characters I met.

Lloyd Alexander has some interesting characters and his stories are fun...but when I went back as an adult I was apalled at how poor the writing style is.
I need to read them again being less critical.
He had another series I liked a lot, in addition to the Black Cauldron series. West something?

I wish!!
I'm hoping to hit Texas in late summer / early fall - but it all depends on money. *grinning*
I am obligated to bring my Becky along, since she'd never forgive me going to see her Granny without her!

Westmark. It's a trilogy,
Westmark, The Kestrel and
The Beggar Queen. It's tricky to get, "Kestrel" is not actually available in print. I think because it was so much darker than most of Alexander's stuff.
As I watch Rurouni Kenshin, I am reminded of some of the themes that showed up particularly in "Beggar Queen" - the hero having to live with his bloody past. Two very different approaches to the same question.

Well, I'll read Alexander after the other stuff, then to see what the debate is about! I'm usually not a very critical reader as long as the story is entertaining, but it depends. Something can be unrealistic and I'll still enjoy it, but if it's blatantly derivative of something else that usually raises my critical hackles.
BTW, speaking of Wind in the Willows, did either of you see the movie version the Monty Python troupe did a few years ago?

Two very different approaches to the same question.Interesting! As I get more into Asian fiction I'm finding it fascinating to compare how they handle themes to how Western writers do. Some things are remarkably similar but others are totally different.

Ohh, ok! I knew you planned a trip, I just couldn't remember when!

Thanks for posting the pic!
Is it just me, or does the tunnel terrain look like a big face?
