Marvel Masterworks: Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 reprints Giant-Size X-Men #1, and Uncanny X-Men #s 94-100. GS X-Men #1 introduced the then-new X-Men, such as Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and others. Issues 94-100 featured the first stories of them as a team. Unfortunately it ends on a cliffhanger, but Vol. 2 is due out this month! ;)

Excellent recommendation! BTW, I believe these same issues were also reprinted in Classic X-Men:

Classic X-Men renamed X-Men Classic with Issue #4

Also, Jen, there is a Spiderman version of Marvel Masterworks reprinting the earliest issues of that as well:

Spider-Man (Marvel Masterworks, Volume 1)

I just wish they would publish the Masterworks editions of Fantastic Four and Avengers in softcover... the hardcover editions are too expensive for my pocketbook.

By the way, have been meaning to mention... the only manga I've ever read is the classic Lone Wolf and Cub. Dark Horse Comics published American translations of all 28 volumes a few years back, and most volumes can still be found at the big chain bookstores. The story: wronged samurai sets out on a long and bloody trail of revenge, accompanied by the only surviving member of his family, his infant son. Jen, worth checking a few volumes to see if you like it, imho!
