I suppose the "D" stands for diesel?
I wonder if that means that Cat used to make gas or steam powered dozers.
Also, they used to (and may still?) designate the actual engine models with a "D", such as the D 343, a 6 cylinder model from the 1960's with 450 hp, turbo and aftercooled. A great motor, truthfully, one for which I have fond memories.
