Hmmm--sounds like he was good at doing it regularly but still off-schedule enough to be surprising? Yeah, not *all* the time. But, more often than just the normal special days. And sometimes just because something *really* good happens or something terrible happens.

Definitely makes sense.

Yeah, when you get to know someone very well, you can detect the subtle differences in personality that tell you today she might need a pick-me-up. My dad was that way with my mother. He would completely surprise her *exactly* when she needed it. Itmay have been that he loved her so much, or that he just always was thinkign of different ways to honor her. Sometimes his littles gifts were a bit off the mark, but they were ALWAYS appreciated. Mom didn't *really* care what it was, it was that Dad gave it to her that made it special.
