It means they think you're nice. In their minds, nice = liberal. You're nice, ergo you're liberal. So they feel safe.
It's sick, isn't it?
Happens to me all the time.

Happens to me sometimes too. In my homestate of Alabama, I'm a fish in water as far as political stuff goes, but when I was in Philly a couple of weeks ago, some people would do the same sort of thing as this guy you're talking about, and they were honestly flabbergasted that I would speak up for Dubya. Flabbergasted.

My theory is that being a liberal is like being a liar.
I would not think that you would be a liar, because I do not lie and cannot relate to someone who does.
If one is a liar, that person will always doubt what you say.
But I have to say that I naturally assume that people in certain curcumstances are conservatives. I thought all homeschoolers were conservatives. One homeschool meeting, the mother of a little girl my daughter made friends with, told me that she had done a field trip to Hilldale College. I was all excited and told her that my girls get the college money we are saving as long as they go to Hillsdale or another conservative college. She then told me that her husband was applying for a position there and she told him she could live anywhere as long as there are, "At least two Democrats that live there." I told her Hillsdale is not for her.
I was shocked and what I wanted to say was, "Lady you are over 40 and sound like you have a brain. Democrat! What are you thinking?!?"

My liberal sister is the same way. I have a liberal aunt that always did that, too. Always tuning up with self-righteous lefty whining about some injustice suffered by someone, somewhere or acting shocked that somebody actually might own a gun, etc. My mom did a certain amount of it, too. Real irritating. I think it's related to self-congratulation and eagerness to display their own self-defined wonderfulness to others.
I eventually had to ask my sister to stop calling me on the phone and laying her silly, leftwing, pro-homosexual, pro-abortion, anti-male, anti-Christian garbage on me; now she doesn't want to have anything to do with me. What a relief. She was getting worse and worse.

When I am placed in the position of listening to a lefty twinkie bash my favorite conservative politicians I look at them with my sweet baby-blue eyes and say, President Bush. I like him a lot. Then I smile and say, what a great country! We can have and tolerate a real diversity of opinion. Isn't it wonderful?
They shut up quickly. Tolerence is a sword that swings both ways.
Conservatives have spent a lot of time being polite and being made by the media into second class citizens. It is time we all take our place in the sun. Admit you disagree. Cram their mouths shut with tolerance and diversity.

When I open my paycheck and grumble about my tax dollars going into a black hole, it tends to dissuade those in earshot of telling me how much they hate Bush. |
Works every time.

They are often astonished that anyone holds a point of view that is NOT liberal. I am astonished at their astonishment.
This is especially so when I talk to people from big cities, like New York and Philadelphia. They think everyone is a liberal too. They're very often quite shocked to hear the things I say.

Your anecdote is not very reassuring. I'm not sure I would want someone with a needle anywhere near me while spouting hatred of Bush.
I had blood drawn yesterday. My phlebotomist ranted about teenagers and how difficlt they are to herd.
