I agree it is a drop-off, but they dumped the salary of the guy that was preventing them from any other significant upgrades. Soriano is a much, much better acquision than Manny Ramirez would have been. He has an entire career of 40-40 seasons ahead.

Soriano is VASTLY overrated. Did you see the guy in the playoffs? He is horrible defensively and has no plate discipline whatsoever. And Soriano will have not have nearly the protection in the Rangers lineup that he had in NY. If you think this trade is good in any way for Texas, I have some swampland to sell you.

Soriano does have some value, Ramirez would have been replacing one anchor with another.
A couple of used bats and shag balls would have been adequate compensation for A-Rod as long as that salary goes away.
