I would give the edge to the sole owner, as opposed to the corporation, but there's also some lousy individual owners out there. Mark Cuban, of course, is great. Walter O'Malley and his family may have broken Brooklyn fans' hearts, but they did keep a competitive team for many years, which Fox has not done since buying the team. Peter Angelos is terrible and a Democrat to boot.

All true. In fact, while I was in the planning stages of the article, that was my assumption.

The AP is reporting that the Yankees and Rangers have finalized the deal. The Players' Association has already approved it. The only hurdle to go is Bud Selig's approval.

You never know with Selig (he does hate the Yankees), but I think he'll approve it. Not because it's out of any great love for the Yankees, but because the Rangers are begging for the financial relief that getting rid of A-Rod would provide. In the Red Sox/Rangers deal, it was the Players' Association, not MLB, who refused to approve the deal.

I live in NY, and I have seen a lot of the Yankees. Soriano is VASTLY overrated. Did you see the guy in the playoffs? He is horrible defensively and has no plate discipline whatsoever. And Soriano will have not have nearly the protection in the Rangers lineup that he had in NY. If you think this trade is good in any way for Texas, I have some swampland to sell you.

I watch probably 100-140 regular season yankee games a year on tv, so I have seen him play a lot. If he has more years like last year, I agree with you completely. Despite decent number during the year, he seemed to swing at everything. In the post season he was awful...for the second year in a row. Ever since he began pressing late in the 2002 season to get his 40/40 season, he has been a mess. Previous to that he, he was awesome. I expect he will return to that form and develop the discipline. His fielding certainly could improve, and I expect it will, or he will be in the outfield soon.

The Yankee farm system is incredibly bereft of any star talent, or even run-of-the-mill talent. Injuries will kill this team. I would have taken that Arod money and built with kids for the long term while there were still good years left in their veterans.

Outstanding point. I watched Columbus play a couple of times this year. With the exception of Contraras doing his rehab assignment and going through Columbus on the way back to the Yanks, there was nothing of note to be excited about. They have really neglected their farm system and it will show, if as you say, the injuries start.

I tend to agree re: Giambi.

He's a defensive liability and I question his state of mind (he looked like a wild man in the playoffs last year). But with the amount of power in this lineup now, they'll all be seeing more fastballs. It's going to be very tough to pitch around anyone now.

The minor-league pitcher, in case anyone cares, is a pretty god one -- LHP Sean Henn, one of the Yankees' better prospects. He's probably two years away.

Did you see the press conference? A-Rod seems a bit awed, as many players are when they first put on the Pinstripes. They always get over it, or they get traded.

He did, however, commit his first error as a Yankee. The stripes in his tie clashed with the Pinstripes on his Yankee shirt. All his errors should be of this seriousness.
