The Catholic Church also teaches that through cooperation with God's grace, we do actually perform good works, and that these result in actual merit. I.e., AFTER having been given the gift of God's grace, we do actually have a claim in justice on some reward from God. This is not to deny that everything good that we do, and all the merit we may have, is contingent on having received, as a pure, free gift, the original grace that results in justification.
