this whole "Non-Catholics go to hell" thing is Catholic dogma, and one of the reasons Luther broke away. This statement makes zero sense. If all Christians are saved, why start another church? Why not stay in the original Church founded by Christ and try to improve it?

You are right - I'm wrong. Luther tried to reform the church, but it didn't work out...he wasn't worried about people outside of the church to begin with - he was upset because they were selling indulgences (give a priest money, be forgiven for your sins). He was then excommunicated and started his own church.
