Gibson was interviewed by the Herald Sun in Australia, and the reporter asked the star if Protestants are denied eternal salvation. There is no salvation for those outside the Church, Gibson replied. I believe it. He elaborated: Put it this way. My wife is a saint. Shes a much better person than I am. Honestly. Shes, like, Episcopalian, Church of England. She prays, she believes in God, she knows Jesus, she believes in that stuff. And its just not fair if she doesnt make it, shes better than I am. But that is a pronouncement from the chair. I go with it.

>> Baptism of Desire and Baptism of Blood are 2 ways to enter the Church along with Baptism of Water. But you still have to enter the Church one way or another. <<
True, but keep in mind, desiring of unity with Christ in spite of "invinceable ignorance" is Baptism of Desire.

I'll take the pope's version any day over the fine evangelical bible interpreters such as Benny Hinn, Oral Roberts, Pat Robertson, Robert Tilton, Jimmy Sweigart, the buffoon in the glass palace, Jim Baker, the harsh looking & sounding lady form Texas, and the other assorted TV personalities who equate one's blessings with how shiny your Rolex is.Are you saying that because I am a Protestant, I get my divine inspiration for those guys?

"No salvation outside the Church."
That is a TRUE statement
And "The Church" is made up of every person that has ever or will ever place their Faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. No matter where they show up on Sunday morning.

There is no salvation for those outside the Church, Gibson replied. I believe it. This guy is a fanatical wacko. Even the Pope doesn't believe this. But Gibson has it all figured out -- there is no salvation outside of one organized Church, the head of which doesn't believe the foregoing. Yeah, uh-huh, right.

A Catholic Heart Attack
A man suffered a serious heart attack and had an open heart bypass
surgery. He awakened from the surgery to find himself in the care of nuns at a Catholic Hospital.
As he was recovering, a nun asked him questions regarding how he was going to pay for his treatment.
She asked if he had health insurance. He replied, in a raspy voice,
"No health insurance."
The nun asked if he had money in the bank. He replied, "No money in the bank."
The nun asked, "Do you have a relative who could help you?" He said, "I only have a spinster sister, who is a nun."
The nun became agitated and announced loudly, "Nuns are not spinsters! Nuns are married to God."
The patient replied, "Send the bill to my brother-in-law."

At first glance, the Church has changed its teachings about whether a non-Catholic can be saved:
In the past, the Church seems to have taken an exclusivist position on the validity of other faith traditions. Numerous popes in the Middle Ages seem to have stated clearly that anyone who is "outside" the Church, who is "not subject to the Roman Pontiff" or is "not living within the Catholic Church" cannot be saved and will not attain Heaven.
Numerous statements since the 1960's seem to have stated clearly that the Church has switches to an inclusivist position. They now believe that non-Catholics can have indirect access to salvation, but that their faith may well place serious roadblocks on the path to salvation.
The church tackles this apparent conflict in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Items 846 and 847 attempt to harmonize ancient and recent statements on salvation of non-Christians.
Section 846 by making the following points:
In ancient times, the Church Fathers often said that "Outside the [Catholic] Church there is no salvation."
The church has always taught that: "...all salvation comes from Christ...through the [Catholic] Church..." "...the [Catholic] Church...is necessary for salvation..." "...Christ ...affirmed...the necessity of the Church which men enter through Baptism as through a door."
Those who realize the Church's role and who "refuse either to enter it or to remain in it" cannot achieve salvation or attain Heaven after death.
This is what various popes meant when they said that there was no salvation outside the church.
Section 847 states that:
The above "...is not aimed at those who, through no fault of their own, do not know Christ and his Church." "Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience -- those too may achieve eternal salvation." 9
This attempt at harmonizing leaves many Anglicans, Muslims, Protestants, Wiccans, and followers of other religions in an awkward situation. Many know of the claims of the Roman Catholic Church and reject them. That would seem to eliminate any possibility for them to be saved and attain Heaven, according to the Roman Catholic Church.

I grew up in a neighborhood that was 1/3 Catholic, 1/3 Jewish, and 1/3 Protestant. My playmates continually told I was going to hell as a very young child, which traumatized me no end. One day as a teen, I woke up with the full knowledge that the Almighty was inclusive rather than exclusive. Never changed my mind since then.

It is a Catholic dogma that no one can be saved outside the Catholic Church. This is the highest level teaching with the infallible pronouncement of numerous popes, councils, etc. While this may have been true historically, my Catholic education specifically dealt with this subject by proclaiming that it was difficult, but not inpossible, for Salvation to occur outside the Catholic Church. And I should mention that I was exposed to this teaching just prior to the implementation of VaticanII as well, so I would expect that current teaching on this subject probably has an even more liberal interpretation than what I was raised with.
