Hullo all!
ecurbh and I have been on an unwanted adventure. My Voice Mail computer (my job) went down yesterday due to a power outage in town (the high winds we had). I have over 500 customers who depend on it, and they were getting busy signals, my phone starts ringing and rang all day yesterday.
Power was out for several hours, and the bad news was, when it came back on, the system did not reboot. Wouldn't power up at all.... it was fried. The guys in the building did say the power went out in a rather violent way.
Well.... First thing this morning ecurbh and I run all the way to Seattle for a new machine. Get back to town and my tech (I have the MOST wonderful tech) is waiting.... he starts taking computers apart.... guts and innards everywhere, and he was able to put my hard drive and the T1 card from the old machine into the new machine so nothing was lost - WHEW!
It is back up and running now, but I feel a little beat up.
Ramius.... I happen to have the box my surge protector came in. (was under the desk the last two years.... They guarantee to repair or replace damaged stuff from surges.... ever tried to redeem such a guarantee? - I don't have the receipt. Was going to call them. My only out of pocket expense will be for the tech guy, a few hundred bucks.

Hair - EEEKKK!! Everytime I even thought my PC might be fried, I've had an all out panic attack! I can't imagine what you must have been thinking.
WN - Nice of you to say that, sis. Truth is, I probably do more in a day than I used to do in a week before kids. :-) Doesn't matter, I don't need a superstar...just a decent guy with plenty of patience and the ability to handle the "other things" in my life. Oh yeah, and somebody who loves me!! *grin*
Rosie - Hiya Rosie! Been missing ya!

I've gotten APC to honor warrantees on UPS's and failed Surge protectors before. They're really good about it. I haven't ever pushed for damage to equipment though. Can't think of any that's happened like that.
I would be surprised if a surge protector has a very long term warranty. They wear out fairly quickly. After a couple of years most SP's are done. That's my understanding anyway.
It's also important to note that not all so-called "surge protectors" really are worth anything. The general rule is that if it doesn't cost more than twenty or thirty bucks, its really just an extension cord with a breaker in it that might or might not really do any good. Real surge protectors are actually pretty expensive.

Good evening...
What's a Voice Mail computer, and why do you have one? If I may ask...
