Nope..... we did not show enough curiosity about lookin' in the bottom of it at the time! Wish I had!

I am thinkin' if the barrel had a lid on it at the buried end it would have collected water.... unless the hole in the top was new from the pony stepping on it recently. It was dry inside. I think it was open to the dirt underneath.
