I was right, "Hidalgo" is a Paint.... a stallion named RH Tecontender. Viggo bought him at the end of the shoot, like he bought Brego.

Slightly surprising to use a horse that is uncharacteristic of a mustang in type, Hidalgo as shown is a lot bigger and more muscled than a Mustang would be, surprising especially because the screenwriter is a long distance race enthusiast and should know better, and hero's whole purpose in life was the promotion of the versatility of the Mustang horse. Oh well, the special that ecurbh and I watched the other night cast a lot of doubt on the whole legend of Hidalgo. There isn't any proof that such a race ever happened, and a lot to indicate it never did. A good story, just maybe not a true one after all. ;~D
