"But ascribing to him all manner of negative motives just seems off the wall, to me." Agreed.

"he suddenly realized how seriously posters were taking his problem and it embarrassed him" No reason why it should. I thought he was completely serious. I didn't sense in any way that he was joking nor did I think that the SUV's were a joke.

I read his post as humor. I sense no real danger.

"If, say, he had to move out in a hurry so would his neighbours." I seem to remember him saying that he didn't have any neighbors close by, but I may be mixing this up with another story.

"In this book 'Pompeii', what happens to the guy when he goes missing?" Well... Rome sends a new man out to oversee the aquaducts and to try to find out what is going on there. A little investigation points to signs that there is volcanic action brewing. And the book is basically the 3 or 4 days preceeding the eruption and this new aquarian's interaction with the people there.... then of course the 3 days of the eruption and his adventure then. As for the original man who came up missing.... well, I hate to give away anything in case any of you are to read the book, lets just say as the plot thickens, the original missing man gets what he deserved..... bwaahahahah!

This whole "volcanic action" thingy is truely fascinating to me. I never took it seriously until I visited Yellowstone last summer and saw that the evidence is pointing to some sort of eruption soon. I guess volcanic activity, to me was something that happened in books... but right there in our own western USA, it happens (remember Mt Saint Helen?)!
Reading the book, I mentioned in previous post has made me aware of some of the subtle signs of this activity. I always in the past had considered hot springs to be really neat and always wanted one of my own. Reading the facts, a hot springs that is stable for years, probably will remain so for many years to come..... but the sudden warming of one's well water is definitly scarey. I wish we could ask him if there is a taste of sulphur or other weired tastes in the water?

Thanks. Sounds like a good read.

Thanks for the ping, null and void! I'm with those who do not necessarily think it's a hoax, but who knows?
It may be a hoax or the authorities may have advised him to evacuate for now until they figure out if there is any danger. Meantime he's without internet access.
Of course, if this had happened it ought to have made the local news in that big, happenin' metropolis of Quincy. I'll go see if I can find a online paper.
To: null and void
No such luck. Also checked papers in Chico and Redding . . . Nothing, nada, zip.

Thanks for the ping! I've been checking the original thread over the course of the day. Looking forward to hearing some news from LJ. Hope all is well.
