You're not alone. When I was active duty USAF, the officers in my unit were issued shotguns (Mossbergs) and the ammo and instructed to stagger the ammo. We were a medical unit and didn't need offensive weapons. The security detail had M-16's.

I always thought the bigger bird shot would be a guaranteed hit and the buck shot would finish up if necessary...
