Interesting.

On the way into Big Bend National Park was where I first started to read the Trilogy.

I had wondered! Thanks for telling me that, because I was hoping they COULD be cultivated, but after sending a first batch to my penpal in England, his report was that they didnt take at all. He was eager to get 'authentic' stuff from Texas and Mexico because he and his partner (girlfriend/wife/not sure) love spicy foods and had gotten a whiff of Southwestern foods. I was eager to share a Texas delicacy. But I think you are right, because I have always considered it a special blessing to find a chile tepin seedling in a flowerbed or garden. Like one is specially chosen. So I figured the pods would be akin to elanor trees from Lothlorien!

Have not tried to cultivate them myself, although I keep a couple of plants in a pot, and let some of the pods fall into the dirt there. Perhaps they will take, perhaps not.

Wonder how I can get a handful of those mesquite beans?? I think my English friends would get a kick out of those too, although I know for sure that mesquite could never grow in England.

I think what most herb dealers do, at least the ones here, is go where they know they are growing and dig them up and put them into pots, although there was a dealer up where my parents live in Marble Falls who were selling the plants in little seedling pots...they looked as if they might have been cultivated. MBY, you live near Austin right? Have you heard of a place called "Its About Thyme" ??

AAHHHHH!!! I have been looking all OVER for some chiletepins!!!! Could you send me some? For me to plant?

Nothing tastes as good in salsa as chopped tepins. Some people confuse them with the slightly oval Pequin pepper. Referred to as the "Mother of all Chili", I have read that they think all peppers are descended from the tepin!

Please could you send me some? I would bless you three times!

I've heard of "It's about Thyme!" I used to live just down the street from that place!

Wow...all this talk about Austin and chiletepins and shops I used to frequent...I feel like I'm getting swept up in space/time continuum!!!

Or it could just be the 4 cups of coffee I've had this morning.

Seriesly, though...either of you heard of Gardenville? Steve used to work there.

No, I don't like Xanth. Try real comic fantasy: read Terry Pratchett.

Ruthy: I am afraid I gave Flat Frodo the only stash I had available...and it wasnt very much at that!

HOWEVER, I am going to make the effort to see if I can't rustle up SOMETHING this spring, as my new back yard is a total blank slate and I am eager to start planting things again. I will DEFINITELY be finding out ways to get some to you and my other friends.

I still have your addy in my FReepmail (I think...am gonna go look now...) so I can send what I find...but it may be a few months (unless someone can do me one better! :D)

Listen, if you could get me a plant, that would be great! I could send you the postage! That would be even better than seeds, cause like you say, I don't know if they'll propogate.

I really love those peppers! They were one of my favorite things about living in Austin!

Gardenville, yeah!!! They used to be all over the place down here...whats happened to them? I take it he used to work for the ones in Austin right??

I found out about the "Thyme" place because I was looking for a place that sold the makrut kaffir lime trees for Thai cooking. No one can ship them into Texas, Florida or California...Im guessing because of the citrus industry. The "Thyme" place turned up to be the one place in all of Texas that sold the trees...and they had a LOT!!

It took us forever to find that place because we are not at all familiar with Austin...even though I went to school at SWT (now Texas State) and would bum a ride into austin every now and again, but never got in my car and learned the streets myself. Teh Hill Country is fabulous, but when you know know whats coming up around the corner, it can be a bit scary when unfamiliar.

Yes, he worked at the one in Austin, before it moved out into the country somewhere...

Steve graduated from SWT in 1994!
