The Hobbit Hole V - Where Many Paths and Errands Meet...
ecurbh

Posted on 12/11/2003 2:07:57 PM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Where Many Paths and Errands Meet...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Upon the bridge we stood was a column made of metal instructing us to follow the path. As we cleared the woods, we came upon a marvelous work of stone with domed buildings atop a large mound of dirt. Was it a hobbit hole in this strange land?! When we entered the place, we found instead that it was called The George Memorial Observatory. We stood in the foyer, not quite certain how to begin to ask what an observatory was, but a kind man who said he knew Alkhin led us up a stone path to the domed buildings. He was running the west dome, he said, but would be glad to show us about the place. We found ourselves sneaking glances at his earlobes to see if he was Man or Elf. Pippin's usual bluntness handled that, however. Man, he said. Only a man. I thought only elves spent time looking at stars!

"This observatory is owned by the Houston Museum of Natural History, but the Fort Bend Astronomy club volunteerst to run it for those who enjoy looking at planets and stars," the man said, who explained that he was Alkhin's husband. Alkhin is female, then (we hope).

"But why is it called George Memorial?" we asked him.

"The Georges were a prominent family in this area. They owned a large ranch and made a lot of money, but had no children to pass it to, so they gave their money to science, medicine, and edcuation. The observatory is part of that education, so people for miles around can learn about the stars. The Georges were decended from the original settlers who came to Texas one hundred and fifty years ago, but Alkhin can tell you more about that. Now...any of you want to see the planet known in space as the Lord of the Rings?"

It took Sam pushing aside his fear and looking to reveal to the rest of us that this man meant a 'planet' not the Dark Lord himself.

Percagesic.
And even sometimes it doesn't work.
Beyond that you start working with possibly addictive tranqs to stop headaches.
*snrt*
At least that's been my experience.
So I sometimes just have to deal with the headache.

I take it back. We are NOT in Midgewater Marsh. I knew this INSTANTLY when Gollum showed up. Alkhin has a strange idea of welcome. Gollum says she sent him to help us find our way out of these fetid lands and to her house. Merry and Pippin don't quite know what to say.

Then Gollum changed his story and said he was really from someone known as eekfrenzy and she wanted us to visit as well.

Whatever Texans may be, they sure are friendly.

You haven't truly lived until you've experienced high-pitched squeals at the same exact moment your headache decides to spike and sends your mind into a swirling vortex of stars and anguish!

In other words, you haven't truly lived until you've wished you were dead! *tee hee*
