The stupid kid and robot dog weren't until later seasons when it jumped the shark. The first year or two, like most shows, was excellent. Like Star Trek, I'm too much of a purist to do "BG, the next generation".

I believe the original Battlestar was only a season long, and it has one of the unique distinctions of being cancelled despite having great ratings. The ratings didn't compensate near enough for the budget, even with the overused viper/cylon fighter stock footage.

As for this version, I watched expecting it to suck eggs. Thankfully, it doesn't suck eggs so far. The little geek references are nice: the blueprint of the cylon design in the beginning, which is identical to a 70's cylon, the Galactica tv theme being used for a news show, the museum that featured a model of a Cylon Base Star and an actual 70's cylon.

For a lot of it, I felt a "Fail Safe" vibe from it. You heard about more of the destruction than you saw. I thought it came off pretty well, and the destruction you did see was pretty eerie.

It had only one one season of 24 episodes. The kid was there from the beginning and his robotic dog was there for most of the season. They did try a cheaper follow-up in 1980 called Galactica 1980 which only lasted ten episodes. It was supposed to be 30 years in the future when the Galactica reached Earth in 1980 AD (which was clearly unready to resist the Cylons). Only some of the old cast, including Lorne Greene, remained. The only decent episode was the final one, which showed what happened to Dirk Benedict's Starbuck in the past.

Though, the stupid kid did go on to be decent in The Neverending Story. Of course, that was a more PC Euro fairy tale. *g*

Now I can tell ya...I grew up on the old Star Trek, but if you have never watched "Next Generation" you are REALLY missing something. I enjoy BOTH for their own merits. Patrick Stewart is one hell of an actor.

Wrong, Boxey(the stupid kid) was in the pilot. He had a real dog who was killed when Cobal(sp.) was evacuated and the Galactica's engineers built him the robot dog(daggit).
