In marshy patches
along side
country roads
the cattail grows
Thick in water
strong as iron
flexible as silk
in a gentle breeze
are we soldiers
of the marsh
standing tall
and uniform
or are we lowly
road side weeds
cursed by some
and revered by others
a basket makers dream
cattails by the stream

Red winged blackbird sings
in the patch it finds;
rules spring
from its reeded throne
and thinks it's king
of all it salutes.
So we, perch
on the ambience
of what is and could be
stigmataed, with the living
scarlet of our arrogance
on our wings and display
explainations of a sort that
suffice for the text of
the either/or of
casual questions
regarding the definition
of what is the reason for
any singing
