we sorted through
old photographs
like so many
piles of rock and
earth
coal-black memories
and crumbly shadows
of shale and shame
seemed the only reward
still we searched and dug
hoping
needing
then,
finding one or two veins
of pure joy and innocence
we reverently placed
them on the mantle of
our hearts
we sighed and
buried our grief
now able to move on

Yellowed photos
bent, dog eared, edges
cracked and faded
placed in folds of
antique lace
and held together
with a scrap of ribbon
hold the aging memories
We young, walked paths
winding through fern
woods and wild mints
and we dreamed together
then warm days chilled
I placed roses on
your stone...
To: January24th
we thought
portugal
a safe harbor
lush
with the blush
of blue forests
and green reefs
susceptible
to the vision
of red wine
