Well, this was one of my duties as a Respiratory Therapist.

Organ donar on the vent in ICU. Papers signed by family. Transport team is here for echo testing. I take him off the vent and bag him (breathe him) through the transport and procedure. Back in ICU, put patient back on the vent. Two neuroligists here and sign that patient is brain dead. Primary physician arrives and signs the death certificate. In all legal matters, this is when the patient died.

But, the deceased still needs care. I and nurses must maintain the corpse. He is still on the ventilator and I must manage his blood gases in the normal range. Nursing does the same in their duties. You see, the body is still alive, even if he has been declared dead.

Finally, the retrieval team from Texas arrives. They congratulate us on our work. Then they go to scrub. The transport team arrives. I disconnect the ventilator and bag the corpse to the OR around the corner. The anethesiolist takes over at the door.

I walk back and resume my other duties.

Too much information...L0L...

My brother has this deep fear that someone might get harvested just a tad early by a zealous meical worker.

Kind of like in the movie when Warren Beatty was removed (mistakenly) from his body by an angel too scared to watch the gore.

Call me fearful when it's not an emergency!
