Not so very different sharkey. The first was fought over the encroachment of the federal government upon the rights of the states. This one will be as well....only this one will have a more to do with government usurping individual liberty and good and evil will be more clearcut, at least for people of conscience and reason. For the most part, the Confederacy was a stricter adherent to the Constitution as written than was the Union. But we are not even going to go there. Not a good idea.

Extremely different.

I know the spiel about the Civil War being about "States Rights". Yes, that was an issue.....but please don't get me wrong....the war was really about....

Slavery

I don't think that's just the victors re-writing history....it simply was the main reason that all those millions of people fought a war to the death.

I know it's more complicated than that....lots more complicated. Yes I have read the arguments and cases that it was not about slavery....I just don't see them as anywhere near right, nor particularly truthful to the passions of the times.

On that we can agree to disagree.

The one we're in is much more complex......yet it will have a central reason for it......once again States Rights may be a part of it.....but that won't be it.

No, it was the encroachment of the states over the rights of individuals - state-sanctioned slavery is Not Freedom. Yankees did not risk their lives to fight for federalism, but for what they believed was right - the abolition of slavery throughout the Union they loved.
