Westy, there is no difference in a glass of wine and a shot of Jack...except if you pour Jack like my family....four fingers to a drink....LOL

I must tell you of my Mother who enjoyed her whiskey cocktails every evening.

She became ill while visiting me and was hospitalized. I worked there and heard her give her admission history to a young nurse.

The nurse got to the question of alcohol and asked if she was just a social drinker. My mother said "Well, let me put it this way. Every evening I make a whiskey drink and sit on my front porch swing. If company comes along the road, I invite them in for a drink. But, if nobody comes, I drink it myself. In fact, I make me several more before I go to bed".

The little nurse looked at her for a minute and then laughed. She recorded in the chart "social drinker". LOL

Babe,

Speaking of Irish wakes....when my dad died in 1999, the first wake was held in TX at the funeral home. Well, after getting down there on the red eye and being bone tired, I was not in a mood to put up with much garbage, especially from some arrogrant priest!

My dad was a surgeon so my brother wanted all sorts of his medical stuff and his dog pictures and loads of other things like cigars ( yes we passed out cigars to everyone) I had to load it and tote it all to the funeral home. We got it set up so there was lots of neat stuff for folks to look and while they visited before the service began.

The monsigneur comes in, high and mighty that one too...and begins to dictate how the service will go..you know..who is going to read what passage, what song to be played etc...I was having none of his directions!!! So we get into it...and my brother the lawyer leaves the room LOL. To make a long story shorter..hehehehe...I gave the eulogy that spoke about his Navy time in WWII and had a hymn selected that befit speaking about the worldly armies and the armies in heaven made of souls who get there..well hishighandmightyness wanted it played elsewhere..when I asked him if he had read the verses he said no and that he wanted this service over before midnight to which I said " You should be thankin your lucky stars this is not a formal Irish Wake or you would be here until tomorrow morning past daybreak!" at that he went along with MY program....

Yep and then I escorted my dad back to Iowa where we had a second wake which required that I pack and take all the keepsake things to Iowa. These were set up again,& this wake had another priest who was a pain in the whoopsiedaisy! We could not speak to a priest the day we got there because no one was around,....so at the wake several show up but the pastor was late..he shows up in a double breasted blazer over dark trou. He looked like he got off a yacht.( maybe a riverboat on the Mississippi) anyway....I went over to him and introduced my self and said that I needed to speak to him about the hymns for the funeral in the morning. This arrogrant little pedantic priest ( yes I'll tell you how I feel about this little p*** ant) said.." Oh the hymns are already selected." I asked what they were and he said " Oh I don't know..the standard ones" To this I said there better not be one note of the 23rd Psalm...." and he asked why as he looked down his snotty nose and I just said " Because I hate that one." ( actually in Viet Nam there were other words made up for that and it sort of distorts the thing...something about being the meanest mother in the valley..Viet vets will know of this)...To make things worse.....he cut me out of giving my dad's eulogy telling me he had to be someplace and I could either give the eulogy at the grave site or at the reception! There is a little post script about this prissy pi**y pedantic priest...he was transferred to another parish..a small one in the country and he didn't like it so you know what he did? He went AWOL! They don't know where he is!!!!!!!! Maybe my dad's funeral needs redoing, with a jerk like that maybe he didn't really have a funeral...

I keep telling my husband I am going to have him put in one of those hermetically sealed things in his recliner. I want him to tape some of his favorite sayings..the first is to be " Hi, My name is Al. You'll like me" ( that is the first thing he ever said to me)...then he can tell people to stop smoking, pump iron etc....either that or I will put him in a big egg timer so I can keep track of my long distance calls time limits...

Girl, you lifted my heart with your post. To tell you the truth, I am glad that someone fights back at what is thrusted on us by "those in the know" of a funeral, whether religion oriented or not.
