My great uncle was in the Black Watch.
He played the pipes til the end. He'd go off across the lake and pace back and forth along the dam.

Beautiful, but eery and haunting.

Unless he was drinking, then he'd play martial music and we kids would put kettles on our heads and shoulder our toy guns and march around banging on pots and pans.

When we bought my Dad a CD player, the first CD we played for him was bagpipes. As he came in through the front door, he couldn't understand why we all standing there snickering as the bagpipes grew louder & louder. We also have a piper a Church who plays there sometimes and belongs to one of the piper groups in town. One of the most poignant moments I have of bagpipes was hearing a band of 6 pipers slowly playing "Amazing Grace" at a Renaissance Festival. The wind carried the sound and it was so beautiful and left not a dry eye in the crowd. And, on St. Patrick's Day, my favorite memory is the pipers at a gathering playing college fight songs...a very rousing event! Black Watch rules! What great memories you must have with your pots & pans & Great Uncle! Pipers have a great military history, too!
