Look at the history of Hindu and Buddhist temples in Pakistan since Partition. Let alone religious worship, they aren't even maintained as historical sites. Or the history of the Sauds, where in Arabia, non Wahhabi artwork was utterly destroyed, despite being of islami origin.

They did a helluva job with the iconic WTC.
