Hey Sean. Can you point me in the direction (with a link or a comment) of the best analysis explaining why al qaeda would wait to set off any WMD whether it be chemo or bio or a nuke or dirty bomb if they had such weaponry at the ready prior to 911? If they needed to perfect the weapons, then that makes sense to me. But some folks are speculating that, for example, some nukes have already been prepositioned here within the U.S. before 911. Or that al qaeda is behind the anthrax attacks. I wanted your take on this if you can.

There was much hubbub down in Havana about Castro going down the tubes recently...military marches on the radio and such, army called out in force etc... what if that is just a cover, what if they are going to foist something...cuban missles would be a surprise element.

Yossef Bodansky's book "Bin Laden: The Man Who Declared War on America". Page 330.

The nuclear weapons (yes, plural : he has between 5 and 20 weapons) Osama ibn Laden purchased consist of a mix of tactical suitcase nukes and actual warheads/bombs. The only ingredient missing according to Bodansky is a nuclear qualified former-Soviet Spetsnaz trooper, and this is now dated material. With proper code a single person of this type or adequately trained surrogate can have a nuclear weapon prepped for detonation inside of 30 minutes.

The weapons were peerfected by the original manufacturers.
The issue after the purchase of them became (in order of importance) maintenance and upkeep and the technical know-how to make them go boom when the time came.

Russian SPETZNAZ had prepositioned nukes stored in NY's Hudson Valley and VA's Shenandoah Valley for quick movement to NYC and DC should war break out between the US and USSR. Nobody has ever come forward to categorically state those weapons were removed following the so-called "end of the Cold War".
