To me, any historical comparisons/analogies to the modern wave of immigration fall apart because of the existence of the welfare state. That changes all the previously existing dynamics for people coming to this country.

The other factor that changes it is how economies have changed from being driven primarily by manual/unskilled labor -- where the more people you have, the better -- to a more automatic and machine-driven culture where there simply are not enough jobs for all the people who can offer only manual/unskilled labor
