NYC council overrides Adams' housing voucher veto

(The Center Square) – The New York City Council has struck down Mayor Eric Adams' attempt to rein in a city-funded housing voucher program, saying it could cause rents to spike for thousands of low-income residents.

More than 60,000 families rely on the CityFHEPS program to help pay their rent. Participants are required to pay 30% of their income toward it.

Adams wanted to raise that to 40%, arguing the city needs to contain the program's costs, which rose to more than $1.25 billion last year.

In November, Adams vetoed the council's bill rejecting the increase, saying it "would undermine the careful balance we have struck between protecting vulnerable households and ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of the CityFHEPS program."

Thank you very much and God bless you.

If you are a taxpayer in NY, your holiday plans should involve U-Haul.

Bet that the antics of NYC’s mayor and city council members would make great campaign ad materials for the Republicans.

I would also suggest reading Atlas Shrugged, it’s a primer for what’s coming to NYC. You’re going to enjoy Directive 10-289.

So much for outgoing Mayor Adams trying to bring some sanity to NYC. Some optimists say that Mamdani won’t be so bad because city council will be a check on him.

This story proves that theory wrong. Council is just as crazy as Mamdani is.

The American taxpayers will have to bail them out when next Dem gets elected. They have no fear of collapse because they know their brethren has their back.

The City Council just drove another nail in the NYC coffin. Faced with rising costs and no revenue relief, landlords will start cutting back on maintenance costs. Over time, landlords will try to sell the property but, facing rising costs and fixed rents, they won’t be able to sell. The end result is property abandonment. This is more or less what happened to Trenton, Detroit, and a number of other cities.

Cities like NY and Chicago are like dump sites where people send their garbage. Keep it all in one place and away from civilized areas.

The “Community Opportunity for Purchase Act,” or COPA, forces sellers to let “community land trusts” and other nonprofits providing affordable housing make first offers to buy residential buildings with at least three units once they’re on the market – and then match competing private-sector offers
