I remember Morrison’s from when I lived in Alabama for a while (Fort McClellan). When I moved to Dallas, Luby’s was around and just about the same quality. I don’t know if Luby’s or Morrison’s are still in business. Here in Michigan we had something called Home Style cafeteria (may have the name wrong) but they are gone now. Only Golden Corral is still around.
I called K and W God’s waiting room. Food sucked.
Last about as long as a communist dictatorship. Three generations or 80 years.
When we visited Greensboro we would usually eat breakfast at Biscuitville for breakfast as we headed back home.
And we’d enjoy Stameys at least one while we were there. I love that vinegsr based BBQ from that part of the country.
My wife is from Greensboro.
“I LOVED cafeterias when I was younger!!! “
I remember the Belle Meade cafeteria in Nashville fondly from my youth.
I once claimed a rubber knife. Probably stabbed my sister with it.
I’m sure you did, I have a younger sister also.
K&W Cafeterias Inc. was a Southeastern United States chain
of cafeteria-style restaurants. It has been a subsidiary of
Piccadilly Restaurants since 2022; until its acquisition by
Piccadilly, its headquarters were located in Winston-Salem,
North Carolina.
That and the current generations have different tastes. I’ve read that millennials and Gen Z don’t care for the Applebee’s/Chili’s/TGIFridays type restaurants and that’s why a lot of them have closed down. (I was never a big fan of any of those, but I did like the long-gone Bennigan’s.)
I believe they also drive the rise in indy coffee shops and sushi restaurants.
Loved Morrisons! Best fried shrimp. Picadilly was great too!
I unfortunately lived in NC for almost 3 years. Never heard of them.
Or Luby’s
Really? Wow. I worked in downtown Raleigh at what was a Radisson.
I don’t remember K&W.
Golden Corral is hanging on. Ponderosa, Bonanza, Sizzler all gone. But I hear Sizzler is trying a comeback.
Remember the name?
TGIF died years ago. Customer based got, ahem, darker. Too many Denny like problems. Same for Tony Roma’s.
No.
MMM, I love the Golden Trough!
Having grown up there (Page HS), I have a route that I do when I am there. Thrift stores, restaurants, food stores, people. The Biscuitville on Battleground is take-out only.
It was called K&W when it was on Fayetteville Street. Then they moved to Cameron Village.
I’m talking 1950s here.
I went to Arnold’s for lunch Friday. Had the meatloaf.
More of a meat and two than a cafeteria, but close, adjacent.
