Senate Majority Leader John Thune is dangling another carrot for Democrats. They still aren’t ready to bite.
In his latest pressure tactic, the South Dakota Republican is teeing up yet another vote to reopen the government Friday, the 38th day of the record-setting shutdown. But this time, he is pledging to swap out the House-passed stopgap bill for a new funding patch, likely into January, along with full-year funding for veterans programs, food aid and more.
“It’s what they asked for,” Thune said Thursday night.
But Democrats, stiffened by their party’s big election wins Tuesday that have papered over rising internal divisions, are expected to block a procedural vote yet again, according to two people granted anonymity to describe caucus dynamics, as well as interviews with several potential Democratic swing votes.
They are intent on forcing President Donald Trump and fellow Republicans to cough up a better deal and finally engage on their central demand — an extension of expiring health insurance subsidies that aren’t definitively addressed in the latest GOP offer.
“Leader Thune isn’t doing himself any favors by not coming to the table,” said Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), who has been viewed as a possible swing vote but said she would vote no Friday.
Several other Democrats professed unity coming out of a long lunch meeting Thursday — one of several they’ve held this week as they’ve wrangled over an endgame to the long shutdown.
Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), the No. 2 party leader, said Thursday that Democrats “are as unified as we have ever been,” while adding that “people understand the gravity of the shutdown.”

I think nuking the filibuster is the Dem’s ultimate goal. They’ll keep it shut down until we finally give in and get rid of the filibuster, and the dems will run riot the next time they are in full control (probably 2028). Open borders, universal basic income, socialized medicine, two new leftist states (PR/DC), and permanent Dem control of congress.
From the Griffin Comprehensive Health Care Cost Reform Plan
HOSPITAL EMTALA COST ASSISTANCE
I would allow hospitals collect up to $1,000 per incident of EMTALA service from employers, with payment not in excess of $50 per week per employee concerned being due to any and all EMTALA providers and not for more than 100 weeks after service. Such payments on behalf of an employee would be considered to be a debt of the employee to the employer. Employers could collect back from employees and ex-employees (and require EMTALA incident employees to participate in an employer plan). State and federal garnishment limitation laws would not apply.
EMTALA REFORM
To get care under the EMTALA for yourself (or custodial child), the hospital might require you to
1. pay $100 in cash or by financial organization card accepted at the emergency care facility,
2. present for recording a valid coverage card and appropriate matching ID if and as required to use the coverage card,
3. hand over your valid SNAP card and present a matching valid domestic governmental picture ID,
4. hand over your valid domestic driver’s license,
5. hand over your valid US passport,
6. hand over your operable cellphone whose model is listed by a current regulation issued by a Secretary of HHS, or
7. hand over a valid domestic governmental picture ID of yours and
a matching financial institution statement less than 70 days old showing a domestic governmental or employer direct deposit of at least $150.
Items handed over may be retained by the emergency care facility until retrieved within one month by the responsible party by paying $100, or more, for the care, plus a retrieval fee not exceeding $50 in a manner the facility accepts. Items not timely retrieved may be disposed of in a legally allowable manner.
MEDICAID ER REFORM
Hospitals may require similar requirements to those of EMTALA Reform but with dollar amounts that are 2/5ths as much.
SNAP CARD ER DEBIT
States might be allowed to authorize emergency care facilities to debit SNAP cards within 30 days of service for ER incidents.
Yeah? So you want them to cave to the democRats extortion?
It will happen.
So let's get the party started.
“Some GOPers act as if the Democrats play fair. Their attitude is “if we do away with the filibuster, then that gives the Dems the opportunity to use it when they get the majority, so we MUST keep the filibuster in place so as not to anger the Dems.”
“What these idiots ignore is the Dems have already tried to nuke the filibuster (failed thanks to Sinema and Manchin), but the next time they get the majority they will not fail. The filibuster will be nuked on Day One.
“GOP might as well do away with the filibuster now and do what is right for the nation. THAT will help them in the mid-terms.”

The wealth is in civilized behavior.
Two-legged animals will always be poor.
The Dems think they have leverage to weaken the Trump movement. They will never settle. If Thune doesn’t gather the Senate to nuke the filibuster & move the agenda Trump’s ability to revive America is gone.
This is the way.
Upper West Side

Agree. Then go whole hog. They would.
Gonna need some shingles, drywall, plumbing and electrical for that. And nails and screws.
But, yeah, that’s a good lumber pack.
Do the nuclear option. No more filibuster. Dems wouldn’t have wasted a minute contemplating this.
End the filibuster.
Pay the troops and air traffic controllers.
Pass voting reforms. Trim back welfare programs. They’ll stay trimmed until January 2029 because Trump has the veto.
A Republican Congress can by majority vote allow citizens to renounce their citizenship and avoid the claws of the IRS if an election would soon result in a loss of Republican control.
The Congress can by majority vote dispose of territory of the United States.
A Republican Congress can cast off New York City. That would mean no more federal welfare money to NYC.
A Republican Congress can cede many of the low-income Democratic areas of California back to Mexico unless the Proposition 50 panel adopts a redistricting map prepared by the RNC.
A Republican Congress can sell off pieces of Vandenberg AF Base to billionaires such as Musk and conservative organizations, who can create independent countries.
I believe military bases have been legally severed from the states they were in, just as DC is no longer a part of Maryland. I believe California has no jurisdiction over Vandenberg AF Base, or should I say Afrikaansland, Trumpland, etc.
Red states can turn over their territory for federal open carry ‘bases of freedom’ which can then be made into independent countries.
They will do that anyway.
"correctly saying that it is the Republicans fault"
Thune needs to shut down Schmuck’s Office.
Trump knows he is in deep trouble on the economy...
