It was hard to take Orson Welles seriously UNTIL you watch the Garbo commercial.

Seeing that commercial, and then looking at her after she became a big star, shows just how much a team of experts in makeup, hair, lighting and costuming can do to transform a person.

- Orson said it.
- I believe it.
- That settles it.

I never got the adoration for Garbo. I guess I just like the girl next door type better. Mary Pickford, Mary Ann...

In Australia, I found it refreshing that new-readers did not wear make-up.

I dunno, PJ - her first big role was in “The Saga of Gösta Berling” from 1924, when she was 19, and she was no cow in that.
The commercial we saw was done when she was a few years younger; there is another on I’ve seen done around the same time where she looks positively dowdy.

For a "cow," she had the first nude scene in a movie in 1932's
Grand Hotel.

Don’t step on Greta Garbo
As you walk down the boulevard
She looks so weak and fragile
That’s why she tried to be so hard
But they turned her into a princess
And they sat her on a throne
But she turned her back on stardom
Because she wanted to be alone

I’ve seen Ninotchka (1939) several times. She looks ok to me. But Melvin Douglas was SUPERB and made the movie. See it if you have not.
