This qualifier says it all: “within the visual range part of the engagement envelope”
The people who write these articles are completely ignorant of the subject.
Back in the 80s the ANG pilots in their F4s would regularly defeat USAF pilots in the new hotshot F16s. Experience and tactics change everything. As one Hornet pilot said,”I just watch the F16 pilot wear himself out making 6G turns.”
Lol. Every article from this BS blog is propaganda for more defense $.
Not only that, but an F35 might very well be accompanied by a cohort of F15s, the way aircraft carriers are surrounded by destroyers, cruisers, and submarines.
Nah. You have to illuminate the target with radar. The radar looks forward. If you are not illuminating a target, the radar missile you fire has nothing to track. There are semi active seekers, but only in terminal phase.
The items that vid shows are flares, not missiles.
“the radar missile you fire has nothing to track.”
The missile can be told where it probably needs to go. The target location information can be updated by an outside means such as a radio broadcast, by its own means such as the “semi-active seeker”, or both.
The missile has an on board radar.
It does. Semi active terminal guidance radar.
Remember, these are potentially stealth targets. You can’t rely on the weak transmitter of a missile’s radar.
You’re at least half right. The whole sensor fusion concept got added to AMRAAM for later variants, but it was largely too late because the enemy was pursuing lower radar cross section by then. Range to the AWACS would be X8 or so the range to the launching fighter. Signal return from the enemy — to the AWACS — would be far weaker than to the fighter, and maybe too weak to justify mid course guidance of AMRAAM.
The idea was pretty solid vs Gen III or III+, but the enemy is stealthier now. Launch and leave? Nope.
Remember, it’s got the AWACS overhead, multiple wingman, and even surface to air search radars that are networked together.
NOTHING FLIES ALONE. Just like a carrier battle group.
Brilliant....
You’re a class act.
