I always wondered what the ‘eye contact’ thing was all about. It seems like a very narcissistic method of control of other people.

Exactly! Barbra Streisand threw a tantrum while in Las Vegas when a room service bellhop made "eye contact" responding to a call. She threw a tantrum at him, then called the manager and demanded he be fired. The manager (probably just the front desk) simply told the bellhop not to answer her calls anymore. Another instance later, she called and complained she wanted her suite repainted a different color.
