It’s unfortunate that people on vacation often let their guard down and seemingly forget that there are bad people everywhere. Especially young people/teens tend to forget that in their quest to enjoy life.

I went to an archaological dig site not far from there below Salerno being run by college friends, PhD archaeologists, who were hosting a dig for their American students for a college credit. One of the dig participants, a married middle-aged woman from Washington State or Oregon, IIRC, decided to take a walk or jog on one of the winding cliffside roads in the area. She was forced into a car by a German tourist and raped. She was devastatated and felt like she had to leave, at the cost of surrendering her grad school credit for the dig.

And that was almost 40 years ago. Cannot imagine what it's like now since the invasion. Italy is nothing but coastline. Boat after boat arrives and they just walk ashore.

Yeah, decades ago... I recall reading about a woman vacationing in Mexico (Cancun, Acapulco?) with her husband. She had no situational awareness of the kind of country Mexico was, even back then. So she decided to leave the hotel and go for an early morning walk (or jog) by herself. Woman power, dontcha know. Got attacked by a drunken scumbag on the beach who raped and killed her. I had to shake my head in wonder. Even in my 20s, I knew stuff like that could happen, which is why I always carried. Always. Some folks are blind to reality, perhaps willfully so.
