Want to try a piston conversion.

The piston shoving rearward on the lug that replaces the gas key can cause buffer tube wear by slightly tilting the bolt carrier. Make sure you get a bolt carrier that is modified for use in piston guns to minimize that problem.

Or, get a BRN-180 upper from Brownell's. That'll do away with the buffer tube entirely. You can even choose to use a side-folding buttstock.

Just don’t waste your time with an AK drum...

I've got a 75 rd drum. Works fine.
Though I can't afford to run thru it anymore.

No experience shooting one. Looked at ballistics, The Speer Reloading Manual Number 13 shows that 7.5 grains of HS6 powder can drive their 124 grain Gold Dot bullet to a MV of 1134 fps, and 8.3 grains of HS6 can drive the same bullet to a MV of 1245 fps.
My Dad told me he really liked the Tokarev 7.62x25 pistol he came across on a govt. vacation. Flat shooting, powerful round. But finding ammo was a problem, so he started using a Browning Hipower, which confused the natives, because he kept firing after seven rounds. “Joke’s on you!”

Wants to sell it, but no gun shop here will put it in stock.

With brand new ARs available for less than $500 these days, a used AR doesn't go for very much anymore unless it is a premium brand.

I’m just someone who has a couple of firearms, and wish rifle ammo prices came back down, so it was affordable to shoot again...

I signed up with this company called Ammo Squared that allow you to have an automatic monthly buy of ammunition and divvy up your purchase among your choice of calibers. They will warehouse the ammo until you ask them to ship. Their prices per round are competitive, and the ammo builds up quickly when you are spending just $20-30 per month.
