“If they can be appointed, why can’t they be un-appointed?”
Redress can take the following forms. Congress is the only branch of government with the power to remove a federal judge.
1). Congress can impeach and remove an errant judge from office. Conviction after impeachment is effectively “unappointing” the judge.
2). Congress can pass legislation putting restrictions on judges in the federal courts below the Supreme Court.
3). If a judge has violated federal crimes (bribery, money laundering etc), the justice department can bring charges against the judge. If the judge is convicted of the crime, and doesn’t resign from office, there is a high probability Congress will impeach and remove the judge.
4). The Supreme Court can put restrictions on jurisdiction of lower courts.
5). Congress, or the states by calling a constitutional convention, can amend the Constitution to define more clearly the jurisdiction of the lower courts or to put term limits on federal judges.
